The Band |
Last Updated : 11/04/99
"Tribe of Gypsies" are an awesome Latin-American inspired melodic rock band. They are about the same in heaviness as Dean Ortega's previous band, Neverland . After forming in 1991, it took 5 years before they finally released their debut, and even then it only came out in Japan. There were a lot of complications involved with record companies and lead singers, but it was Dean who finally ended up singing on the debut. It's a totally stunning record. See the review below. The following year the band released an E.P. "Nothing Lasts Forever" which was like a farewell to Dean, as once again he left a superb band! But this E.P. was surely a good way to leave as it is just as good, if not even better than the full album. Dean then went on to record an album with his own band Revolution Child . After again looking for a vocalist for the band, Greg Annalla from "Seventh Sign" was chosen for the role, and a 2nd full length album, entitled "Revolucion 13", was then recorded and released in Japan at the end of 1997.

Nothing Lasts Forever (1997)
This 6 track E.P. is a most original and masterful little collection of songs. There is so much emotion in the vocals, the latin beats throughout just keep the energy going constantly, and the guitar playing is just astonishing - check out the solo on "Melena", my god!

Tribe Of Gypsies Victor VICP 5773 After listening to tens of thousands of records over the last 25 odd years, I rarely get my doors blown off, but by golly, I'm legitimately floored by these guys who hail from LA, California. Led by guitar-wiz Roy Z (ex Project Driver, Bruce Dickinson) and Dean Ortega (ex Neverland) on vocals, this all Latin band play a very Santana, Allman Brothers style of rock with a great sense of AOR style added in for good measure. Opener "In My Town" is pure, unadulterated Santana. You could almost smell the tacos and fajitas in the air. "Death Song" is a classic AOR tinged track with massive swelling vocals from the gigantically talented Dean Ortega. "Guajira" is a track that the legendary Carlos Santana would kill for, while "Walking On Water" is very Allman Brothers influenced, with a guitar solo from Roy Z that has Dickie Betts' name all over it. Fucking awesome!! "Mero Mero Mambo" is a gorgeous, Latin-filled instrumental that has some amazing fretwork from Mr. Z. "Fire Dance" rocks big and bad, with its Latin percussion, but the real show stopper is the epic "We All Bleed Red", which is seven plus minutes of nail-biting intensity. Every damn track, and there are thirteen of them, is tremendous. If you buy one Jap import from now to the New Year, let this be it. 10/10 Tom Coyne
