The Band Funk-o-Metal Carpet Ride (1990) |
Last Updated : 15/04/99
Electric Boys are a hard rock band from Sweden who started themselves off with a new brand of funky rock . Their first album, called "Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride", came out in 1989 and was released in Sweden, featuring ten funky rock songs. The band then got picked up by a record label in the U.S. Five new songs were written which were produced by Bob Rock and released together with five from the original record to give a second version of the band's debut album. This version was made much more widely available. The five new songs deviated from the funk rock of the first version, and were not such strong songs. Videos were made for two of the tracks from the album : "All Lips and Hips" and "Electrified". Their second album, "Groovus Maximus", is slightly more exciting than their debut. The band try a better approach and try new styles in their songs. "The Sky is Crying" and "Dying to be Loved" are different to any of the songs in their previous album, the former being a hard rocker with harmony during the chorus and the latter being an emotional ballad. However, there are still remnants of the style of first album here. "Dying to be Loved", "Mary in the Mystery World" and the title track were all released on MTV. The band's third album is called "Freewheelin'" and is their best. It features, once again, a new style but with harder rock and a variety of songs. "Sad Day" is a brilliant mellow track in which the band show their full musical potential. The rest of the songs on this album are really hard and powerful songs. The first track, "Ready to Believe", says it all. However, Freewheelin' was not as successful as the band had hoped and the band split up without even a proper tour to support the album. One of the guitarists joined Alice Cooper while Conny Bloom formed another band called Titanic Truth. Titanic Truth released a debut album in May 1996 which is self-titled and is available on Stockholm Records. The band consisted of Conny Bloom [vocals, guitar], Andy Taylor [drums] and Ferstander [guitar] BUT the band then split up after the album's release. |

Freewheelin' (1994)
Their third album in which they have managed to get away from too many boring rock songs. There is more originality in this album.
1. Ready to Believe : 9/10 This first song shows that the band has sorted itself out. Put it on full and rock! 2. Straight No Chaser : 8/10 Another slightly boring rock song but nearly as bad as the usual ones. 3. Groover : 8/10 An original song in which the verse is a different style to the chorus. Pretty decent. 4. Mountains and Sunsets : Brilliant at full volume. A brilliant intro and the guitar line is really cool. 5. Sad Day : Very mellow although there's electric guitars everywhere. Play it really loud when you're depressed. 6. Nothing for Nothing : 8/10 Same sort of style as "Mountains and Sunsets" but not quite as good. A brilliant song though with good lyrics, guitars and drum beat. 7. Sleeping in the World's Smallest Bed : 8/10 An attempt at using sound effects to set a scene for the song to be about but it's not a very good song and the lyrics are crap. 8. My Knuckles Your Face : 8/10 Good rock song and fairly exciting! 9. Not My Cross to Bear : 8/10 Same as above with a brilliant into. 10. Sharpshooter : An excellent song, not very rockable as it has a slower beat but it's still really cool. The intro is brilliant. Listen to it! 11. Some Kind of Voodoo(Bonus Track) : 7/10 A bonus track so you can't expect it to be brilliant. Not bad though. 12. Freewheelin' (Bonus Track) : 7/10 Slightly better than the the previous track but not spectacular. Sing it when you're going down a hill on your bike at top speed! 13. Black Betty (Bonus Track) : 8/10 This is a cover of Ram Jam's old hit, done the Electric Boys way, and in my opinion is much better. It rocks harder, and the guitar solo kicks!

Groovus Maximus (1992) Funk-o-Metal Carpet Ride (1990) |
Groovus Maximus (1992)
An improvement from their old album and less of those boring songs. There are more original songs in here but some of the others are the same.
1. Groovus Maximus : 8/10 A good start to the album. Good rockable song. 2. Knee Deep in You : 8/10 Another good rockable song. 3. Mary in the Mystery World : 8/10 An original song which works well with bits of mellow and bits of rock. 4. Fire in the House : 8/10 Fairly average. Tending back to some of the songs of the previous album. 5. The Sky is Crying : 8/10 A decent song, different to the others. The song is a plead to us to do something about the world problems and is in support of Greenpeace. 6. Bed of Roses : 8/10 Like the style of "Mary in the Mystery World" but not as good. The whole thing would be better without drums or electric guitars. 7. She's Into Something Heavy : 8/10 Not a bad song with a catchy chorus. 8. Dying to be Loved : 8/10 A nice slow tempo song. The verse is sung with the Electric Boys style of almost speaking the words. 9. Bad Motherfunker : 8/10 A cool rockable song. Good on max volume and a cool rap in the middle. 10. When Love Explodes : 8/10 Not too bad, but edging on the previous album's bad songs. 11. Tambourine : 8/10 Quiet and sweet verse which explodes at the chorus. Not bad! 12. Tear It Up : 8/10 A cool chorus - "Tear it up!", and the guitar lines not bad. 13. March of the Spirits : 8/10 An instrumental track which isn't bad.

Funk-o-Metal Carpet Ride (1990) |
Funk-o-Metal Carpet Ride (1990)
Too many boring and non-exciting songs in this album (like "Captain of my Soul" and "Rags to Riches"). Some good ones but they don't quite make up for the bad ones.
1. Psychedelic Eyes : 8/10 A good standard rock song, especially when played loud, but the chorus gets a bit annoying after a while. 2. All Lips 'n' Hips : 8/10 The verse in this is really cool. The singer is backed up by shouts at the end of each phrase which adds a bit of excitement to the track. The chorus is in the same style and the solo is really dudish. 3. The Change : 8/10 A slower tempo song which is nice to listen to. The singer kind of speaks the verse and this is a cool style of the Electric Boys. 4. If I had a Car : 4/10 A really boring song with the same guitar riff throughout and nothing much happens. 5. Captain of my Soul : 8/10 Not bad but a bit repetitive. A good intro and the guitar riffs are pretty cool. 6. Rags to Riches : 8/10 A good song with a good guitar line but, again, a bit repetitive. 7. Cheek to Cheek : 8/10 A pretty awful one. A mellow style song would be better but there's not much scope for this song. 8. Electrified : 8/10 At last, something a bit original. A cool jazzy rock but not it's amazing. 9. Who Are You : 8/10 Another bit of originality which is quite good. An interesting style. 10. Into the Woods : 8/10 The same style as "All Lips 'n' Hips" but there's nothing that sticks out about this.
