and crazy but
its got a great social life going on here. i´ve made so many friends so
far
already, and last night we went to a party on the beach with some of them
which was really good although abi got a bit too wrecked and spent asll her
money. the people here are so friendly and they all seem to want to get to
know me which is so good for the confidence.
and my god there are some beautiful peopple here, peruvians are definately a
beautiful race and need much sparkly ali magic i think.
today we are going to cuzco the inca capital for the festival of the sun
which will be street partytastic and lots of fun, somew friends from our
hostel are coming too but thier flying and we´re getting the bus cuase
its
cheap (but over 20 hours).

I am in love with Peru
hey beautiful people
this place is so cool, we got to cuzco the inca capital yesterday
and it is
so much nicer than lima. this morning we went horse back riding across the
peruvian mountains stopping at 5 inca sites on the way and now i am sitting
in a cafe next to the main plaza where there is the biggest street festival
i could ever imagine, it goes for miles and it hasn{t stopped all day, there
is music and parades and dancing and fireworks and markets and oooh my god
so many people, i just love it.
we met another local today who is teaching us spanish for a couple of weeks
and showing us around, today he took us to the locals market it was amazing
and so cheap. last night me and abi had a 4 course veggie meal with drinks
for 1 pound 20, and today we had the same for80 pence and its so delicious.
the people here are so beautiful and they seem really interested in us not
just as gringos.
tomorrow is the inta rimi festival of the sun and our friend is taking us
there for free with the locals(normally its $10)and then its more parties
all day and night again.
well i have to get back to the festival now but i love you all endlessly
muchos besos

Hey chicos I love this place
hey you beautiful people
well i have to say this place is really hectic and fast moving but oh my god
am i happy right now. well the inti rimi festival was beautiful, lots of
colourful locals running around as incas performing ceremonies in the
saxawaman(not correct spelling) ruins. i didnt get to see too much because
we went for free with a couple of local guys that we met and there were so
many people there that it was kind of hard to see but still it was the whole
festival vibe, but with llamas everywhere and lots of colourful peruvians.
we had a couple of dodgy days with these guys we met but today everything is
all cool, they took usto a local market today withgiant dredded llamas and
sheep and jesus the cows are 3 times the size here.it seems that i am now
seeing an equadorian guy, who is a dredded hippy with lots of energy, he{s
called miguel and i think i just sent pictures with this but it may not have
worked.
today we met some more friends who are from crawley and guilford so were all
gonna meet later to do some fire spinning in the nearby ruins. tomorrow im
getting an incan lizard tattoo wrapped around my ankle (ooouuuch) by these
other guys that we met and they have given me such a discount, i think in
england it would be about100 pounds and they are gonna do it for about 6
yay(sorry mum and dad).well i think we have decidede to stay here a bit
longer maybe a month or so and do macchu piccu soon and nasca and lake
titicaca.
well i have to go and meet a friend to get some paraffin(this has been an
endless mission for 2 weeks now)but finally it should be successful.
well i love you all and i will write really soon with more news

Hey more news from Peru
hello my pretties
well i havent written for a while because i have been trekking the peruvian
mountains on horse back for 3 days and as usuaal everything here has been
well hecttic. the trek was definately exciting, it was the most beautiful
country side but the horses werent well looked after so i got to test my
spanish by sticking up for them. for the first day it was rough mountains
and they didnt have shoes and didnt get fed so me and abi walked for miles
to give them a break, the first night we camped by a lake in the mountains
and it was so cold that the next day i just wantedto go home. well we walked
for the morning because we wouldnt ride the horses without shoes then when
we got over another big mountain i just stopped and explained in perfect
spanish that horses are to be respected and fed a few times a day and that
we werent gonna wait till we got to the next stop that they had to be fed
right now. so the guides had to go and ask a local villager in her mud house
for some food and in exchange we gave them our food so they invited us
tojoin them for lunch. it was so beautiful, our first real experience in
rural peru actually eating and talking with the villagers. they made an oven
out of mud in the ground then filled it with herbs then put a blanket full
of potatoes and strange twisted swede like things in and broke it all down
to cook while we talked and they gave us traditional peruvian clothes to
wear and we all took pictures it was quite amuzing and pictures will follow
soon.that night we stayed with a family in the next pueblo feeling much
happier that we had stuck up for the horses so they were happy, the family
we stayed with had 4 beautiful kids who we stayed up chatting to. they are
such kind and generous people and we took turns singing songs to each other
it was really beautiful. they invited us back to stay whenever and made us
bracelets. the next day we headed back to cuzco but again we didnt trust
that the horses had enough food so we walked what must havebeen 10 miles in
the baking sun until we hitched a lift with a local man in his very scary
excuse for a truck.
well now i{m clean and less sun burnt and im with miguel again which is
really turning out quite well, he is so much fun and hes taking me and abi
tomacchu picchu on friday then off to lima so i can meet his mum and sort
out a passport so he can join us in brazil and bolivia.
i have run out of time now but i will write again later today when i meet up
with abi, im just selling jewellery with miguel for a bit first to raise
money for the passport.he is really creative too, he makes the most amazing
jewellery and hes a tattooist so i think i may come home more decorated. my
new tattoo that i got the other day is beautiful, its an inca lizard thats
wrapped around my ankle, i love it.
anyway hasta luego amigos
mi amo todo el mundo

Hello friends
I'm sure that everyone has their memories of "mishloahiim". I am sure that few miss it. Love-Barry
Yoav and his girlfriend Edit were here on Saturday. Yoav writes:
On our way back to TA we had to stop in a traffic jam caused by a "hefetz
hashud" [a suspicious package]. After a while of waiting people around
us got tired, turned off their engines and exited their cars to get some fresh
air. While we were sitting bored in our car thinking of something to do we noticed
that on the lane to our right was a truck load of chickens being led to their
final doom. Quickly we took out a piece of paper and used it to express the
last thoughts of the chickens.
Edit did the hanging, and I took the pictures.
Everyone behind the truck thought it hilarious.

Hello
Hi How are you all?
Rina ... who unfortunately is not in good terms with the web
told me I should answer your nice letter. So I am.
It was very nice to catch up on your family news and to show your family
web site to Lyrie, who is my 7 years old princess.
She heard a lot from my mother about Nelly, who's stories were read to
her. Now she was delighted to see her picture.
We are still here in our crazy crazy country. waking every morning in our
quaint suburbia village overlooking the Mediterranean, were we live our
seemingly quiet life, in a nice little house, with 2 kids, a dog and a
sedan.
It is so weird and surreal to have such a "normal" life were there are
armed bodyguards in every country club, school and super market, and my kid
knows she is never never going on a public bus.
The newest member of our family is Romy who joined us on 1.1.03
Rina still regrets her not being a boy. But the rest of us are delighted.
Rina is still her self, still flying...but times goes on...
Lyrie is the soon to be cool teen, she will be 8 in August but even kids
here age quickly. Last time we went abroad she asked if it is safer there
and was happy to find out nobody explodes.
Yaron is working at G.E. and has just finished his maternity leave.
I am a teaching assistant at Haifa University, and now that I have
recovered from my pregnancy, trying to finish my M.A.
I am sending you our latest family pictures. It was taken after Purim but
has nothing to do with it. And one of Romy. knowing all babies are cute,
but mine is cuter.
Happy Pessah
Warm regards, and all the best to all of you
Gali

E-mail from Peter Strop:
News from Tucson:
Dear family friends:
I finally started to write this 2002 family newsletter. It took me a while because of my laziness, and hesitance to write in English anything other than business mails, but also because I felt like I should wait until the really last day of 2002 to make sure that a really good year will not get spoiled by something at the very end. (As you can see I am not completely over two previous years that had few bad surprises for us).
To start with something bad in 2001 turning into very good in 2002, I should mention that Dasa recovered completely from her stroke that she had after a car crash about a year ago. She recovered completely in very short time and started to work again at the University in January. She still works in the Dept. Pharmacology, University of Arizona. Another good news was that her heart function improved substantially, becoming almost normal, and she also recovered after her colon cancer surgery. As you can see on some of the pictures displayed on our family web page (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/strop/), that we put together quickly yesterday to complement this newsletter, she is in a very good mood, active and enjoying life. This is even more true for our little grand-daughter Veronika (now 27 months old), who had open heart surgery in May 2001. She recovered and improved extremely quickly. She did not only catch up to her peers, she has endless energy and always seeks new adventures.
Pavel, after five years at the California Institute of Technology, defended his PhD thesis in April and graduated in June (first two pictures are taken in his lab after graduation ceremony, the 3rd photo is Pavel and his friend relaxing in their house in Pasadena). He worked in the protein crystallography and protein design fields. In the November issue of Science they published a structure of membrane ion channel. After graduation, Pavel took a long, four months break, before he started as a postdoc at Stanford University this October. During his time off, he did a lot of biking (picture 4 & 5 are from Utah), than lived in a van and traveled along the west coast to Canada and back, doing adrenalin sports like rock climbing and white water kayaking with his friends (pictures 6-13). After two weeks hiking in Alaska with his girlfriend Lisa (no pictures released) he spent two weeks in Prague and at our summer cottage with his sister Jitka, her husband Jacob and little Veronika (pictures 14 - 19). During his adventure travels we were in touch from time to time, but we did not see him until November when he flew to Tucson, and of course he also came to Tucson for Christmas (photos 28 -35).
This year I did not feel that I spent that much time away from our home in Tucson, and we did get to see our kids more often. I have a responsibility for the Biology group in Tucson, but I am not in charge of the Aventis HTS group in New Jersey anymore. It was sometimes a bit more fun, but I had to spent more than half of my time in NJ hotels, and on the plane. During the first half of this year I still had to fly to Europe quite often and few times I visited Prague to see Veronika, Jitka and Jacob.
In the summer we planned a long holiday together (Dasa, Jitka, Jacob, Veronika and myself) mainly hiking in Sumava (Bomische Wald). The four of us (without Jacob who had to work for Ixos, his German computer software company) then went to a little Greek village at Rhodos where we spent a week or so. It was so nice (sorry no pictures) that we decided to spend another ten days around Thanksgiving at US Virgin Islands (on St. John island) (photos 20 - 27). Jitka and Veronika flew to Tucson and than after a week with Dasa and myself to St. Thomas. Jacob came from Prague. It was really fantastic, very few people, bungalow on the beach, wonderful sea with sandy beaches and tropical vegetation, crystal clear water with lots of corals and fish. Nice weather, beautiful swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving (just Jacob & Jitka) made us decide that next year we must go again. For Jacob and Jitka it was quite a change when they returned for Christmas from pleasant tropical temperatures to -20 deg C in Prague.
The only drawback was that I was promised to loose about 8-10 pounds when I will snorkel for few hours each day. To my disappointment I did not lose any weight, so I got a stationary bike for Christmas (picture 34). I hope that I covered almost everything, except maybe I forgot to mention that we have (for four years already) a big but very gentle and kind German shepherd Danny. The other dogs on the pictures are his friends Miky who is with us for Christmas since her owners are traveling to Europe, and Jitkas retriever Buddy.
We wish you Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
Peter, Dasha and Pavel from Tucson Jitka, Jacob and Veronika from Prague

Love from both of us. M-H et Guy

Latest from Frank Wyant in Oz:
Hello Peter,
Your piece on the formation of the chess club brought back many memories of nearly 50 years ago, not only because of the chess club of which I was treasurer, but also, at that time, a young lady advertised for people interested in photography. We met at the local school and there was quite a good turnout. Because I had some knowledge of running meetings and of photography I became the chairman and was later elected president or some such office, I don't remember the details. We met at the public house at the top of the town and I began to give talks on photography because of my previous experience as a professional. Just before we emigrated to Australia the proprietor of the photographic shop at the bottom of the town took over the reins and seemed to be very good. i think I will send them a goodwill card and ask how they are progressing. Perhaps someone in the family can supply me with an address.
Also enclosed my favourite picture of Edith and her finches. the other is Edith being helped by a Transport Official. She tells them when she is travelling by train and they are always there to help her on and off the train. She is a very popular with them. She travels to Perth every Tuesday for the Senior Citizens concert where she is regarded as a very special lady. She has given talks on the stage. She is very patient, always listens to people, with a happy face and smiling eyes.
So this is my contribution for Xmas Love, Frank
From Sigalith in Brazil:
I have 2 sons, Rony 19 and Gil 21 (who has Downs Syndrome). I have been separated from Gideon for 2 years now, though not legally yet. My son Rony is studying Radio and TV communications at the university. Gil is in special school. As for me, I am looking in the stars, as I specialized as an Astrologer. Have a published book, here and in Argentina - "Introduction to Kaballah". IŽll try to send pictures soon.
Love to you all. Great to hear from you. Sigalith
Carrying on an EichnerTradition:
While surfing the net just recently I came across the following links:
http://www.egchess.fsnet.co.uk/history.htm [note the section on club founding and the picture of Patrick Moore]
http://www.david.fryer.dial.pipex.com/jamboree/EGPrimarySchools.htm [look under Ashurst Wood]

And so it goes... as Kurt Vonnegut used to say.
News Bulletin from another Eichner Family - November 27th 2002:
Nina attends Michael Hall School in Forest Row, a Steiner-Waldorf School,
where she is now studying for her GCSE exams. She's been going there since
she started in play group when she was three years old, she's now 15!
Nina played in her first senior orchestra on Oct.19th when she was invited
to play double bass for the Mid-Sussex Sinfonia at Ardingly College
performing a programme of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. She will be
auditioning for the East Sussex Youth Orchestra in December, despite this
her main interest in life is listening to the likes of Red Hot Chilly
Peppers (a rock band for those of you with empty nests) and riding her pony
with a friend on Ashdown Forest.Joshi also played in his first senior orchestra last Sunday Nov.24th,
playing second violin in the Worth Community Orchestra at Worth Abbey. He
was the youngest player in a very adult band.
Joshi is settling in well at Worth School after 10 years at Michael Hall. He
particularly likes the sporting activities and plays for the school teams
for his age in cricket and basketball. The downside is the extremely long
school day, he leaves home at 7.45 and returns on a short day at 6.45pm. He
often
stays on at school for music rehearsals and sports clubs and then gets home
at 9.30! This plus Saturday mornings at school means we don't get to see
much of him. He plans to make loads of money this Christmas by busking with
a cello playing friend at the shopping mall in Tunbridge Wells.Heidi is about to make her long term dream come true by buying a flat in
Munich, her home town. At the moment the flat is no more than a big hole in
the ground and some pretty pictures, but when it is completed at the end of
next year it will be situated about 10 minutes walk away from the European
Patent Office where she works as a free-lance simultaneous interpreter. She
is in Munich at the moment as I write this, no doubt admiring the view
adjacent to the hole. Let's hope it looks as good with a 50 flat block
filling the voidI'm semi-retired. Alpnet, the company I worked for, albeit very part-time,
was bought by a competitor in January this year leaving me fairly free,
after months of very hectic negotiating, legal contracts and nerve racking
tight rope walking (in a business sense), Alpnet was on the verge of
insolvency when it was acquired. I'm relieved it's over and while waiting to
see what further challenges life offers me I'm helping Michael Hall with
it's major building programme, new sports hall etc. That's the news from this branch of the family tree for today,
Best, Mike Eichner
