Past Productions

The Sheffield Youth Theatre has performed classic texts from many different sources over the past twenty five years.

The very first production, in August 1977, was a collection of improvised pieces, dance and voice work. This took place at the Merlin Theatre and 100 students were involved.

During the period of March - June 1979 Mummers Plays, some of which were devised by the students, were performed in venues such as the Crucible Foyer, Residential Homes and in the open air at Walkley and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet Fair.

In 1982 came the first Shakespeare performance, "The Tempest", acted in the Crucible Studio and in 1983, also in the Crucible Studio, the first performance of "Rural Rides" by William Cobbett took place. A cycle of Medieval Mystery plays was presented at the same venue in 1985 followed by  Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carol".

"A Quest for the Holy Grail"  by William Wray was taken to the Swaledale Art's Festival having been first performed in the University Drama Studio and various churches in Sheffield during may and June in 1986

Performances in the Library Theatre have included "A Traveller's Tale", (1986)adapted from the ancient legend of Hoi Chi the Earless;  "Briar Rose" (1987)devised from Grimm's Fairy Tales and also in 1987 "Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan,

 

"Beowulf" based on the Anglo Saxon poem was given at the Merlin theatre in 1989 and in 1990 "The Ramayana" the great Indian epic about the life of Prince Rama was given.

Other venues have included the Botanical Gardens,(numerous Shakespeare and other sources) Sheffield Cathedral ("Behold a King - a play about the betrayal of Christ) The Leadmill, Manor Castle, Beauchief Abbey and various schools, libraries and churches in and around Sheffield
