Speed Test

If you have successfully installed BB4W (BBC Basic for Windows) by Richard Russell you can now test its speed on your machine by using a test program (Listing)

I would be interested to receive your result by email, in order to report back on this page.

Dear Richard,
   I carried out the 'speed test' on my computer, a 'Tiny' System 108, Intel pentium(R) 4 CPU.  10M loops took 3.33 secs .. = 3003003 loops/sec.
   Cheers, Ed.

On receiving Ed's reply I was prompted to test my new machine (TIME Phoenix 2000 with 1666Mz Athlon XP 2000+ processor, 512 MB SDRAM, Windows XP Home Edition) :

The following is a reprint of the test screen saved to the clipboard by pressing Ctrl/TAB

Time to do 10 million empty FOR NEXT loops = 1.14sec

Rate = 8771929 loops/sec

It would be interesting if you could report
your measured rate and machine specification
(make, processor speed, etc) by email
to richardweston@onetel.net.uk

My (year 1990) Archimedes 420/1 does 29673 loops/sec
BBC Basic for Windows on my (year 2000) 600MHz Tiny computer does
2.19 million loops/sec
 ie BB4W on the PC is 64 times faster than the Acorn Archi.

My 2004 PC World Advent 3718 using a AMD64FX 3400+ processor, does
10,309,278 loops/sec (time to do 10 million = 0.97 sec)

Hope you find this useful

Hi Richard.

Here are the speed test results for my pc.

Speed Tester - this will take a few seconds only...

Time to do 10 million empty FOR NEXT loops = 0.95sec

Rate = 10416666 loops/sec

My home built pc comprises an AMD3200 processor with 1.5GB Ram
and completed the speed test in the time above.

This was taken using Ctrl Tab to copy the screen.

I recently purchased BBC BASIC for Windows from Richard Russell and its just great. I then found your website and  things just got better. I haven't written in the language for 20 years but if I do anything worth while I will send you a copy.

Regards
John Burke
