Elizabeth's 2 CONC early memories closely mirror those of the author. Indeed he probably 2 CONC lived in the immediate vicinity and shared a knowledge of many of the 2 CONC the sites and people with Elizabeth. 2 CONT 2 CONT The following article is taken from a tape recording by Mr Dai Harmon, 2 CONC who grew up in Penyard, Merthyr Tydfil. He still lives in Merthyr, and 2 CONC has helped many people search their family origins, working at the LDS 2 CONC family history centre in Merthyr. 2 CONT 2 CONT I have lived most of my life , on and off in Penyard, Merthyr Tydfil. 2 CONC Talking about Penyard, what a wonderful place to live. It was for a 2 CONC child, an adventure playground. I lived in the longest street, Darren 2 CONC View, it came up behind the Theatre Royal and also Trevethicks 2 CONC monument. You come up the redhill and, there's Darren View stretched 2 CONC out in front of you at the top on the left hand side. The backs of 2 CONC Darren View open out where Trevethicks first steam engine ran. It was 2 CONC at the back of Penyard where Trevethick ran his engine to win a £500 2 CONC bet for his iron master against Crawshay. Up above Penyard, Incline 2 CONC Top on the left hand side you had the Rockies, with a big stack there 2 CONC which was about 25 feet high and about a yard square, which you could 2 CONC climb up inside to the top and look all around Merthyr Tydfil. The 2 CONC Rockies, well, what a place to play. It had a nice stretch across it 2 CONC with rocks everywhere. Down below we used to build 'cloche tents' and 2 CONC we used to fight the boys from Penydarren who used to come up, and 2 CONC we'd throw stones at each other like some invading armies. At the 2 CONC bottom of the Rockies was a small pitch where we would play football 2 CONC or cricket. Up above the Rockies was the big white tip made from all 2 CONC the shale that came from the Dowlais works. About two thirds of the 2 CONC way up was a cave. We used to play in there and it was magic. 2 CONT At the top of Incline Top was another place called the Aerials, it was 2 CONC another shale tip and, what a beautiful tip it was. There were huge 2 CONC buckets which would come along and deposit the shale on the tips. As 2 CONC boys, we would climb in the buckets and go for a ride. 2 CONT It was all very dangerous, and we'd often get many bruises, but 2 CONT they were wonderful times 2 CONT There were also many other tips where we used to slide down them on a 2 CONC piece of tin, and many a pair of trousers were torn. That was the top 2 CONC of Penyard. 2 CONT At the bottom of Incline Road there was a little mining pit. I always 2 CONC remember getting on the horsedrawn carts that carried the coal and, on 2 CONC the side was a sign 'clean hand picked coal'. I never really knew what 2 CONC it meant. Next to the side of the pit used to be the old brickworks 2 CONC where many women of Penyard found employment. Very hard work it was 2 CONC too. Crossing the road there were trams pulled by horses going into 2 CONC the level behind Model Cottages, which was the top street of Penyard. 2 CONC Up on the left hand side was a slag heap and, often you would see 2 CONC people  sorting through it, picking out the little bits of good 2 CONC coal that may have been tipped there. The Patches was above Penyard on 2 CONC the right hand side as you left up the Pontfen Road and, in front of 2 CONC the Aerials was the Dandy, another tip. The Patches  was a place 2 CONC where people would sink little mines to get the coal out for 2 CONC themselves, unemployed people including my father. He used to have a 2 CONC bike, well, a boneshaker really and he'd take it to the Patches and 2 CONC collect a bag of coal and bring it home. Up on the Dandy I remember 2 CONC Jack Jones the playright, who was a Penyard boy, writing stories. His 2 CONC brother Ike Jones was a bookmaker. At the bottom of Darren View, you 2 CONC had the old Thomastown park and the new Thomastown park. Opposite 2 CONC there was Queens Road school. Also in Penyard you had Queens Road 2 CONC infant school, and this was at the back of Garth Terrace. The Queens 2 CONC Road school was where you went if you didn't pass your test for the 2 CONC grammer school. It was known as the Queens Road school for the over 2 CONC 12s. Anyway, there were these parks, Thomastown parks. Oh what 2 CONC beautiful places. At the top used to be a circle where many a fight 2 CONC was had. It was just like a boxing ring, although it was only a 2 CONC circle about 20 feet across. I remember fighting Dai Bedford, Georgie 2 CONC Hammond and a few others. 2 CONT There was a dingle where we would play 'pop-op'. There were bushes 2 CONC either side, and we'd be in gangs hiding in the undergrowth. As soon 2 CONC as you saw one of the other gang you'd point at them and go 2 CONC 'pop-op'-'pop-op' and they would be out of the game. It would last 2 CONC until there was only one member of each gang left to 'pop-op' each 2 CONC other. 2 CONT A little football field was there and further down you had the tennis 2 CONC courts and the bowling green. The bowling green was a very important 2 CONC place, as Thomastown bowling club was one of the oldest in Merthyr 2 CONC Tydfil. Past the bowling green was a statue erected in memory of the 2 CONC people of Merthyr Tydfil who were killed in the first world war. As 2 CONC you left the old park, you went straight into the new park, and a 2 CONC lovely park it was too. You could play football, cricket or whatever. 2 CONT Behind the other side of Darren View between Mountain Air and Queens 2 CONC Road was the Legion. Oh boy the Legion, the football pitch. Above 2 CONC that, made out of tips of rubbish, now the site of Edwards Close and 2 CONC Vernon Close a housing estate, was another football field, so we had 2 CONC two football fields. They were known as the bottom Legion and the top 2 CONC Legion. The bottom Legion was where the Jones boys of Penyard played. 2 CONC Not only them, but everyone loved the legion. We'd start playing 2 CONC football about nine in the morning and finish when it went dark. 2 CONC Football all day! 2 CONT I remember Cliffie Jones coming up from Swansea, and he was such a 2 CONC little tut, but he would play on the wing and he was brilliant. Bryn 2 CONC Jones learnt his 25-30 yard passes on the legion. Mind, it wasn't a 2 CONC flat ground by any means, it was up and down like a yo-yo, but it was 2 CONC the Legion and everybody loved it. We'd go to the club there on a 2 CONC Sunday as there were no pubs open after 2.00 clock, and the older men 2 CONC would challenge the younger men to a football match at half a crown a 2 CONC man. It was a lot of money in those days. There would be a proper 2 CONC referee and very often it would be a very tidy match. 2 CONT Down at the bottom of the Legion ground there was a club built by the 2 CONC unemployed, a wooden shack, but nice. Big enough to hold a stage, and 2 CONC we had a few concerts too. It housed a snooker table and people would 2 CONC be playing all day Saturday and Sunday. I learnt to play solo whist 2 CONC there with Ike Jones the bookmaker and his brother Dickie Jones. That 2 CONC club became the social centre of Penyard, and everybody got to go 2 CONC there at one time or other. The whole of Penyard was a great adventure 2 CONC playground. You'd have to pay hundreds of pounds today to go to an 2 CONC adventure playground like that! 2 CONT Let's talk now about some of the surrounding areas and some of the 2 CONC people that lived there. Shops, as you came up to Darren View there 2 CONC was a paper shop, 'Owens' the paper shop. 2 CONT Wyn Owen and his son were lovely singers, and Wyn used to sing with 2 CONC the best dance bands in Merthyr Tydfil. Owens used to deliver the 2 CONC papers to all over Penyard. Opposite was a shop called 'Coffees'. 2 CONC When they had money they used to open, but if they were skint they 2 CONC would close. On the corner of Penyard there was a little wall and a 2 CONC lampost, and the singsongs that used to be there every Saturday night, 2 CONC beautiful singing every Saturday night.; They just used to congregate 2 CONC there. The Dees. Amos Dees, a good footballer mind, and he could have 2 CONC gone places, he used to have his Hawaiin guitar and we used to have 2 CONC lovely sing songs with it. Coming up into Darren View was Butlers shop 2 CONC and Jack Nash the butchers. Turning round into Penyard, up by Garth 2 CONC Terrace you'd have Pugh's the shop. Now Mrs Pugh was a character. She 2 CONC used to wear a wig. A little gate led up to her shop, and as you went 2 CONC through the gate the bell would go ting-a-ling-a-ling. She always had 2 CONC meat and faggots in the window, with potato sacks outside. If you 2 CONC wanted potatoes she would go and weigh them with her hands, and then 2 CONC if you wanted a cake, she would put the cake in with the potatoes 2 CONC using the same dirty hands. There were always flies gathering in the 2 CONC window. We would sing a little song, behind Mrs Pugh's back and we 2 CONC called her 'scruffy'. The song would go like this: 2 CONT As I walked into Scruffy's shop, the stink was enough to blind me, the 2 CONC faggots said, God strike me dead, and the peas walked out behind me. 2 CONC Oh my cat is dead, it died in Scruffy's shop. 2 CONT We always sang it as kids, but never in front of her mind. At new year 2 CONC she always gave the children a little gift. Further up the street was 2 CONC bakers. Mr Baker used to cook everybodys turkey if they had turkey, 2 CONC although most people in Penyard at that time could only afford 2 CONC chicken. He used to bake bread as Mr Baker was the baker. Coming down 2 CONC Corporation Street, you had Jenkins the shop. Mad Mr Jenkins and his 2 CONC father before him, always kept that shop, and funnily enough when he 2 CONC died he left it to Aidan Williams. It was a grocers shop, and that was 2 CONC where most people of Penyard would go. My brother Raymond, published 2 CONC a book of poetry, and there's a lot of good poetry about Merthyr 2 CONC Tydfil. Well, he went to Jenkins shop for some cheese, and he brought 2 CONC it home and my mother asked him if she could have a look at the 2 CONC cheese. Well, there in the cheese were some lovely teeth marks! 2 CONT She asked, "Ray, have you been eating this cheese?". "No Mam" said 2 CONC Raymond, and he continued, " Mr Jenkins said the cheese was overweight 2 CONC so he bit a piece off to make it the right weight". Well, to this day 2 CONC Raymond still claims he was innocent. After the incident he was given 2 CONC the nickname 'Mickey Mouse', which has stuck with him all of his life. 2 CONT Now then, let's talk about schooling. Once the children were about 4 2 CONC or 5 years old they used to go to Queens Road infant school. A 2 CONC lovely  school, right there in Penyard itself, at the back of 2 CONC Garth Terrace. It was a good school and the schooling was great. My 2 CONC teacher was Mr Hopkins, I'll never forget him. He was a lovely teacher 2 CONC and bred me a love of mathematics, which I still love today. 2 CONT So all the children used to go there, and then on to Queens Road 2 CONC senior school, which was down a little further. They would go there 2 CONC until they were 11 years, and take their 11 plus, and if they passed 2 CONC the test they would go to either the grammer school, and oh it would 2 CONC be published in the Merthyr Express, all the people who have passed 2 CONC for the grammer school. I'll never forget my sister, who was living 2 CONC opposite. Her husbandworked in the Merthyr Express and she fetched the 2 CONC paper over early, for me before it reached the shops. I had passed 4th 2 CONC in the borough. Of all the children I had passed 2 CONT There's excitement. I loved it, I'll never forget it. It didn't do me 2 CONC any good mind. I left grammer school  after 2 years and worked 2 CONC for Tommy Bought the butcher, pushing the little bike about and giving 2 CONC meat out for 14 shillings per week. Now there were 2 grammer schools 2 CONC in Merthyr Tydfil. One was called the County grammer school and that 2 CONC was opposite Penyard, and there were some wonderful teachers there. 2 CONC The other grammer schoolwas very well known. The Cyfartha grammer 2 CONC school. One wasn't better than the other, and probably County was 2 CONC slightly better, but there wasn't much between either of them. 2 CONC Schooling in that time was really fabulous, no question about that. If 2 CONC you didn't make it to the grammer schools, you'd go to Queens Road 2 CONC school or you'd go down Quakers Yard technical school where you were 2 CONC taught such things as engineering even. 2 CONT Now, the mining industry, where they went down the mines so 2 CONC young  or worked at the pithead with their fathers, before my 2 CONC time they were going down the mines there at age 8 or 10 year old. In 2 CONC my time they had to be 14. That's where they would go a lot of the 2 CONC people, down the mines. But, in Merthyr, industry, Kayser Bondor. Now 2 CONC Kayser Bondor was a stocking factory and that's where I went after 2 CONC working in the butchers shop. I made stockings for Queen Mary. I 2 CONC remember she was size 8 ½. 2 CONT In the 1930's, at one of the lowest points in the economic history of 2 CONC the area, with high unemployment and boarded up shops, a fashionable 2 CONC hosiery and underwear manufacturing company, Kayser Bondor Ltd, was 2 CONC the first new company to start operations in the borough. The factory 2 CONC was built at Dowlais, and  men with a tradition of heavy industry 2 CONC had to quickly adapt themselves to operating high- precision  2 CONC machines, but the success of this venture was demonstrated in the 2 CONC opening of a new lingerie factory at Pentrebach in 1945, and other 2 CONC similar enterprises like Berlei, and more recently Forma and Morris 2 CONC Cohen, have opened in the borough. 2 CONT There were other factories, and , just after the war Hoover, which was 2 CONC the biggest factory in Merthyr Tydfil was opened by a Penyard boy, 2 CONC Danny Bowen, coal miner who lived on the top of the hill in Darren 2 CONC View. His wife and his mother were killed in a train crash going 2 CONC through a tunnel towards London. Very sad. Danny was a member of the 2 CONC Bowen family who were very prevelant in Penyard. Jackie Bowen 2 CONC and  Frankie Bowen. Danny was a lovely singer who teamed up with 2 CONC Wyn Owen. They called themselves Owen and Bowen, lovely singers and 2 CONC were always booked to clubs not only in Merthyr, but other parts of 2 CONC Wales too. 2 CONT In Penyard there were many families, and there was the chapel. The 2 CONC Penyard Forward Movement Chapel. There used to be soup kitchens in 2 CONC there during the thirties to help people because times were so hard. 2 CONC There were Sunday school trips to Pontsarn, lovely. Or down to Barry 2 CONC Island, oh what trips. But that was it, that was your holiday once a 2 CONC year, the chapel trip, of course there were no other holidays in the 2 CONC thirties. Come September there was hop picking in Hereford and people, 2 CONC particularly the unemployed would go up to Hereford on the backs of 2 CONC lorries. Once there you would have a small tent of some kind and lay 2 CONC down straw as a mattress. You could make some money picking those 2 CONC hops. You'd fetch money home, also sacks of potatoes, sacks of apples 2 CONC and other vegetables that would last you through the winter. Oh, it 2 CONC was wonderful, it was great. I used to love hop picking. 2 CONT In the thirties, you'd never see a car in Darren View, except once a 2 CONC week. There was a person called 'Jiggy', Mrs Williams, and she used to 2 CONC have a stall in the market in Merthyr and in Pontypridd. Well a taxi 2 CONC would come up Darren View to pick her up, and we'd all have to stop 2 CONC playing football. We'd pick up the ball and run over to the taxi, as 2 CONC it was such a rare thing to see. We were always playing football in 2 CONC the street and there was only the odd horse and cart that would 2 CONC pass  us by. There was Sprawley's horse and cart and the rider 2 CONC would shout in an Italian accent, " chipsalot, steaming hot chips, 2 CONC chipsalot, steaming hot..gerraway froma my horse, watta you doing with 2 CONC my horse?" He'd also come in the night selling his chips, with 2 CONC lanterns on the cart. Mr Harris would come on his horse and cart 2 CONC trying to get salvage, a rag and bone man. If you had any clothes 2 CONC you'd get a penny for them if you were lucky. You'd have to be very 2 CONC lucky with old man Harris, he was tighter than anybody! But, he had 2 CONC six girls to look after and wasn't working, but there you are, it was 2 CONC all horses and carts in those days. Don Cunnington who lived in Garth 2 CONC Terrace at the back, his father Mr Cunnington was a tram driver who 2 CONC used to drive the trams up Merthyr High Street. I remember the last 2 CONC one coming up there. 2 CONT I remember Lord Haw Haw in the second world war when we were digging 2 CONC up the tram lines to make bullets. He said " You people of Merthyr 2 CONC Tydfil, you're digging up your tram lines for bullets, well we'll send 2 CONC bombs over, and we'll bomb them rails up for you." We used to listen 2 CONC to the wireless during the war, and I remember Mrs Smith up above 2 CONC hearing Lord Haw Haw saying "You don't know what bacon and eggs is 2 CONC anymore, because it's all powder eggs in Merthyr" and her husband was 2 CONC working the night shift, so she got her frying pan and was cooking 2 CONC bacon and eggs, and, turning to the wireless she shouted at the top of 2 CONC her voice, " smell this you stupid man! Of course we've got bacon and 2 CONC eggs!" 2 CONT Good old Mrs Smith, I'll never forget her. Prior to world war II, 2 CONC because money was so short , we'd see people coming from the Rhondda 2 CONC trying to make money. They would start at the bottom of our street 2 CONC singing, and work their way up. They put their caps on the floor and 2 CONC would get a copper here and another there, and take it back to the 2 CONC Rhondda. They must have walked about 10 or 15 miles to come and sing. 2 CONC Then our boys would go over to the Rhondda and sing there. 2 CONT Now what else about Penyard? Well, Penyard was the Las Vegas of South 2 CONC Wales. There used to be so much gambling going on, well well, Las 2 CONC Vegas had nothing on it. You could go round the back of Garth Terrace 2 CONC any time of the day, you could be playing Pontoons, you could be 2 CONC playing Farrel. Micky Jones used to teach us. On the top he would put 2 CONC the Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7 and all squares around them. 2 CONC You'd put your money on say the Ace, and he would turn a card over, 2 CONC and if it was an ace he would take the money off. But, if the Ace came 2 CONC up second he'd pay you out. So if you put threepence on it you'd take 2 CONC sixpence off. But, if two Aces or two Kings came up he'd win, so the 2 CONC bank always had a little better odds. Then there was pitch and toss. 2 CONC You'd put your little china mot down and then scratch a line to throw 2 CONC from. You'd toss the pennies to get them as close to the little china 2 CONC pot. The one who got the closest would pick up the pennies and throw 2 CONC them in the air. All the ones that came down 'heads' he would keep, 2 CONC and all those that landed 'tails' the second closest man would then 2 CONC toss them in the air, and so on and so on. That was pitch and toss. 2 CONC Then of course there was Purling. Purling was just two pennies. You 2 CONC would bet on if they would 'head' or 'tail. 2 CONT There was a big circle, and I've seen as many as 40 or 50 people in 2 CONC it. One of them, Eddie Hunt, would say "C'mon heads for Eddie" when 2 CONC he threw his pennies in the air. I've seen people winning £5 having 2 CONC only started with say 5 shillings. That was Purling. Then, when the 2 CONC police came, someone would shout "Police, Police" and everyone would 2 CONC scatter all over the place. Mr Dunford from the bottom of the hill 2 CONC there, he was the policeman for the area and he'd come now and then, 2 CONC just to keep the boys on their toes. But, I don't think he ever caught 2 CONC anybody! 2 CONT S.O.Davies was the M.P for Merthyr Tydfil in the twenties and 2 CONC thirties, Labour of course. The first socialist M.P. in Britain came 2 CONC from Merthyr. I remember in the early days our house used to be turned 2 CONC into committee rooms for Will Owen to stand as the local councillor. 2 CONC These were the days of the means test, when they would come up to your 2 CONC house. If you had items in the house, you'd havr to sell them before 2 CONC they would give you any benefit money. In our house, my Grandmother 2 CONC was the head of the home, at 18 Darren View. My mother and father were 2 CONC there too, but it was my Grandmother who was the head. Every morning 2 CONC you would get up and the fire would be lit by one of the women. They'd 2 CONC black lead the grate and clean the brasses around the fireplace. There 2 CONC were no carpets, just rag mats which my Grandmother used to make. On 2 CONC a Sunday morning we would all help together preparing vegetables for 2 CONC our Sunday dinner. After dinner, all the women would wash the dishes, 2 CONC and then the family would dress up in their 'Sunday best' clothes for 2 CONC the 6'o'clock evening service at church. We'd have tea before we went, 2 CONC usually fry up using any vegetables that were left from dinner. Then 2 CONC it was off to church, Presbyterian at Penyard Forward Movement Church, 2 CONC and Watkin Williams the minister. He was a Military Cross Captain 2 CONC from the army during the 1914-18 war. He had a lot of friends in 2 CONC London from his army days, and when he visited them, he would cadge as 2 CONC many things as possible to bring back to the poor people of Penyard. 2 CONC He was one of the greatest men I have ever known. He lived for the 2 CONC people and died for the people. My brother Raymond wrote a poem after 2 CONC Watkin Williams died. Mondays was always wash day. Out would come the 2 CONC big old tub, it was huge. Large buckets of water were poured into the 2 CONC tub and out would come the scrubbing board. Hard graft! If you had 2 CONC miners in the family, well their clothes were dirty, really dirty. 2 CONC Perhaps another of my brothers poems describe it accurately. The 2 CONC washtubs gave people  a lot of arthritis in their time without a 2 CONC doubt, her hands were crippled before she died. I remember well that 2 CONC her and my Grandmother worked hard on the washtub. Then came Tuesday, 2 CONC which was ironing day of course. They dried all the clothes on the 2 CONC fender in front of the fire. Beside that of course, they had to do all 2 CONC the cooking and everything else, and the money was tight, there's no 2 CONC doubt about it. If possible she would try and find a bit of work and 2 CONC go cleaning down Mrs Jones. Later in life she got work in the laundry. 2 CONC It's funny those women, they never stop, all their lives they worked. 2 CONC Their homes were like little palaces, you could eat off the floor, 2 CONC they were clean, they worked hard. 2 CONT During the 1920's and 30's most of the work for women was in service, 2 CONC there was nothing else for them to do. So they would go and work for 2 CONC other women for a penny or tuppence an hour, doing the ironing, piles 2 CONC and piles of ironing for a couple of coppers so that they could buy 2 CONC something for the children. When I think of the work people had, and 2 CONC very little money to get by. My father had been in the 1914-18 war and 2 CONC came home with Asthma. He was given a little pension. So, with his 2 CONC little pension, there would always be people around trying to borrow 2 CONC it. He'd have it on a Monday and lend some of it out, and then go out 2 CONC on Friday trying to get it back off them. Very hard, very very hard. 2 CONC Yes, during the 20's and 30's in the valleys, times were very hard, 2 CONC and people used to live in each others houses, there were no doors 2 CONC locked at night or in the day. All of a sudden the door would open, 2 CONC and we could be in the tub bathing! Mrs Lucas who lived next door but 2 CONC one would come in and she'd be talking away as we were bathing in 2 CONC front of her. Everybody would come to our house, "...can I borrow a 2 CONC cup of sugar?", "...can I borrow a little tea?". And, of course the 2 CONC teapot was always there, with plenty of Welshcakes for anyone that 2 CONC called. Then, the last thing at night, my father would clean all the 2 CONC childrens shoes, so that when we got up for school in the morning we 2 CONC all had clean shoes. Yes, times were hard then, but we also had a lot 2 CONC of fun as children. 2 CONT As I said earlier, Penyard was a lovely place to live. I hope you 2 CONC have enjoyed these memories of Merthyr and Penyard in particular. 2 CONC Thankyou. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 1 BIRT 2 DATE 11 MAY 1923 2 PLAC Merthyr Tydfil 2 NOTE Father was publican (or married to the publican) at the 3 CONT 3 CONT Nelson Inn (or maybe Penydarren End Inn 01685 722530) 3 CONT Pontmorlais 3 CONT Merthyr Tydfil 3 CONT Mid Glamorgan 3 CONT Wales 3 CONT 3 CONT (The Nelson Inn no longer exists - 2001) 3 CONT 3 CONT Although he should have paid maintenance he rarely did. The letter with the cap and sword worn by 2 CONC Lieut. Howard 2 CONT at Waterloo, with other relics, came into the possession, recently of 2 CONC the 2 CONT Howard family, who thought it might be interesting to the readers of 2 CONC The Empire: 2 CONT 2 CONT "IN THE BIVOUAC CLOSE TO THE GATES OF PARIS, JULY 8, 1815." 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT We have been so actively engaged that we have not had even time to 2 CONC write, 2 CONT supposing that we could procure utensils, which was impossible. Most 2 CONC likely my 2 CONT name by this time appeared in the Gazette among the wounded on the 2 CONC 16th ; this, 2 CONT I am happy to say, was but slight. It would be ridiculous in nie to 2 CONC think of 2 CONT entering into any detail of the business of that day at all events, 2 CONC for the 2 CONT newspapers have given such a correct account of everything, but on the 2 CONC evening 2 CONT of the 16th June, while in our bivouac, and not far from the village 2 CONC of Quatre 2 CONT Bras, we heard the most terrible thundering of cannon and our 2 CONC division was but 2 CONT in motion. This foretold sport. True enough in about two hours after 2 CONC that, six 2 CONT o'clock, the balls were buzzing about our ears in the most delightful 2 CONC manner. 2 CONT All the lights were formed on the left--the battalions for 2 CONC skirmishing. Upon 2 CONT the whole we got off very well, some seven or eight men wounded, until 2 CONC near 2 CONT dark in the evening when I got a clink on the outside of my left thigh 2 CONC which 2 CONT knocked me down and obliged me to quit the field. This was 9 o'clock. 2 CONC Although 2 CONT very seriously bruised, finding nothing more than a little flesh 2 CONC disconcerted I 2 CONT got the blood washed off and joined my company the same night in 2 CONC advance of the 2 CONT whole. We kept our ground in the morning. Four picquets commenced a 2 CONC little 2 CONT skirmishing but our position they would not attempt to wrest from us. 2 CONC We were 2 CONT now relieved, and went to join our regiments, but I am very sorry to 2 CONC add I 2 CONT found they had suffered most severely --- three officers killed and 2 CONC seven 2 CONT wounded, and about 100 men, and my poor friend Farlong was one of the 2 CONC number 2 CONT wounded, and dangerously. He sent for me repeatedly, but no one could 2 CONC find me, 2 CONT being too far in advance. He said he must die and therefore sent his 2 CONC watch to 2 CONT me. In the morning I went to see if I could find him, but they had 2 CONC sent him to 2 CONT Brussels. I therefore could not see the poor fellow, but I have heard 2 CONC from 2 CONT several people, who say that they think he will do well. The ball 2 CONC entered his 2 CONT right side, and remaining either in his lungs or shoulder blade; it 2 CONC never can 2 CONT be extracted. On the 17th June we retired in the best possible order 2 CONC to the 2 CONT heights of Mount St. Jean or Waterloo. He we took up our good and 2 CONT never-to-be-forgotten position and fought our battle. Our regiment was 2 CONC placed 2 CONT on the first hill of our position, where we could see the French 2 CONC Buffers 2 CONT maneuver before us. I rather think they would have attacked us the 2 CONC same 2 CONT evening, but we saluted them so prettily when they made their 2 CONC appearance on the 2 CONT hill opposite the next morning, the 18th, and my birthday, the French 2 CONC began 2 CONT their movements by daylight, we, of course, being ordered by the noble 2 CONT Wellington to move accordingly. About ten o'clock the sport began by 2 CONC an attack 2 CONT on our right, but here they were repulsed with immense loss. This they 2 CONC repeated 2 CONT several times and as often failed, they then tried the left and were 2 CONC very 2 CONT warmly received, and did not gain much ground. Our brigade and 2 CONC regiment was in 2 CONT the center and during some time was exposed to nothing more than 2 CONC cannon shot, 2 CONT but which frequently milled us. Towards the latter part of the day the 2 CONC enemy 2 CONT made a most desperate and furious attack on our center, here we had 2 CONC our share 2 CONT of bloody work. I never shall forget the scene and the carnage. Really 2 CONC the 2 CONT French cavalry, who behaved admirably, charged so repeatedly and so 2 CONT _________________ 2 CONT 2 CONT wounded officers to the rear and much less men. Just at this moment 2 CONC was 2 CONT pointed out to me the meaning of being warmly engaged. Our brigade and 2 CONC a 2 CONT brigade of guards were the only soldiers that we could see, and we 2 CONC were so 2 CONT ________that I thought that things were going badly, and we made up 2 CONC our minds 2 CONT to send all our colors to the rear, still determined to stay while we 2 CONC had a man 2 CONT left. There we were --- could just maintain our ground, when to our 2 CONC delight 2 CONT came up lots of reinforcements. Indeed Lord Wellington had been with 2 CONC us in very 2 CONT hot fire. I said that we should be immediately supported. Just at this 2 CONC moment 2 CONT he brought up all the cavalry, artillery and infantry from the reserve 2 CONC and 2 CONT advanced. The French gave way in every quarter, and in fact were so 2 CONC panic 2 CONT struck that they could not form them again. Our brigade halted, having 2 CONC had a 2 CONT sufficiency, for the general and every field-officer, but two, of the 2 CONC brigade, 2 CONT were either killed or wounded, and the whole strength reduced to about 2 CONC 300 out 2 CONT of 1500. 2 CONT 2 CONT The 73rd regiment was commanded by a young lieutenant. Things were so 2 CONC bad that 2 CONT I was acting brigade-major for some time, but Captain Harty, of the 2 CONC Light 2 CONT company being only slightly wounded, he took it and I did the 2 CONC adjutants' duty. 2 CONT When telling the men off after the action there were only 72 men on 2 CONC the 2 CONT parade., 15 officers having been lost 4 killed and 10 wounded, 2 CONC together with 2 CONT 1500 men. In the two days we had in casualties 24 officers and 250 2 CONC men. I have 2 CONT often expressed a wish to see a general engagement. I have and am 2 CONC perfectly 2 CONT satisfied. I should never have forgiven myself if I had not been in 2 CONC this action 2 CONT of the 18th in consequence of my wound. Thank God I am safe, I had a 2 CONC very 2 CONT narrow escape that day, a bullet passed through my cap and must have 2 CONC been 2 CONT within the eighth of an inch of my head. I intend bringing the cap to 2 CONC England. 2 CONT I can scarcely fancy myself alive and writing to you after what I have 2 CONC seen. We 2 CONT may almost say England conquered France in one battle and entered her 2 CONC capital. 2 CONT Now for the most melancholy part of my tale. So great was the 2 CONC confusion and so 2 CONT certain were they in Brussels that the battle was lost, that they fled 2 CONC to 2 CONT Antwerp in thousands; the consequence was that our barrage which had 2 CONC been sent 2 CONT there for safety was plundered and destroyed, they say by Belgic 2 CONC troops, but so 2 CONT it was in our regiment. We had not a second shirt or blanket to cover 2 CONC us from 2 CONT very wet weather. Think of a man being wet and dry in the same clothes 2 CONC for ten 2 CONT days; no halting days. We had but one halting day between Brussels and 2 CONC Paris, 2 CONT and, therefore we had no time to write or change our linen. We took 2 CONC position of 2 CONT the Heights of Montmartre on the 5th of July and Paris the 6th. 2 CONC Montmartre is a 2 CONT tremendous place, and from that you have the most magnificent view of 2 CONC Paris, 2 CONT perhaps, that ever was seen anywhere. To-day the Parisians have 2 CONC hoisted the 2 CONT white flag, but not in any way unanimously. We have guns planted in 2 CONC every 2 CONT street to give them a brush if they attempt to stir. It's a great 2 CONC shame they 2 CONT did not march us through Paris. I certainly think the French account 2 CONC of the 2 CONT battle is very good. Excuse all things -- writing on the ground -- 2 CONC driven mad 2 CONT with the business in my department. 1 BIRT 2 DATE 18 JUN 1793 2 PLAC St Stephens 1 DEAT 2 PLAC Alive in 1851 census 1 CHR 2 DATE 18 JUL 1793 2 PLAC St Stephens 1 FAMS @F89@ 1 FAMC @F17@ 0 @I65@ INDI 1 NAME Lucretia /HOWARD/ 2 GIVN Lucretia 2 SURN HOWARD 1 SEX F 1 NOTE Source: St Stephens parish register 2 CONT 2 CONT Source: Census 2 CONT 2 CONT 1851 Living at Cuckmans Farm (A Widow) 1 BIRT 2 DATE 17 FEB 1795 2 PLAC St Stephens 1 DEAT 2 DATE 28 SEP 1852 2 PLAC St Stephens 1 CHR 2 DATE 24 MAR 1795 2 PLAC St Stephens 1 BURI 2 DATE 5 OCT 1852 2 PLAC St Stephens 1 REFN P77 1 FAMS @F19@ 1 FAMC @F17@ 0 @I66@ INDI 1 NAME William Henry /WILMOTT/ 2 GIVN William Henry 2 SURN WILMOTT 1 SEX M 1 REFN P78 1 FAMS @F19@ 0 @I67@ INDI 1 NAME Frederick /HOWARD/ 2 GIVN Frederick 2 SURN HOWARD 1 SEX M 1 NOTE Source: St Stephens parish register 1 BIRT 2 DATE JUN 1796 2 PLAC St Stephens 1 DEAT 2 DATE AUG 1809 2 PLAC St Stephens 1 BURI 2 DATE 27 AUG 1809 2 PLAC St Stephens 1 REFN P79 1 FAMC @F17@ 0 @I68@ INDI 1 NAME Stephen /HOWARD/ 2 GIVN Stephen 2 SURN HOWARD 1 SEX M 1 NOTE Source: St Stephens parish register 2 CONT 2 CONT Baptised 5 November 1797 1 BIRT 2 DATE NOV 1797 2 PLAC St Stephens 1 REFN P80 1 FAMC @F17@ 0 @I69@ INDI 1 NAME Mary /HOWARD/ 2 GIVN Mary 2 SURN HOWARD 1 SEX F 1 NOTE Source: St Stephens parish register 2 CONT 2 CONT 1851/61/71 - Living at Cuckmans farm 2 CONT 2 CONT 1881 Census: Howard,Mary Born in St Stephens, Hertford, age 82 female, 2 CONT 2 CONT Head of house, unmarried.
