About this site

This website is dedicated to exploring the work of the 20th century British philosopher John Macmurray  (In development)

Macmurray was interested in understanding what it means to be a person.  He had a gift for writing with simplicity, depth and passion whilst at the same time offering razor-sharp conceptual analysis. His writings give us a wholly new perspective on the human condition. His thinking is relevant to the problems we face as a world today.

Macmurray’s highly original work – mostly written in the 30s, 40s and 50s – is little known.  His thinking was out of tune with the mood of British philosophy in that period, and the academic community resolutely ignored his work.  His name did not appear even in the most comprehensive dictionaries of philosophy.  Despite this lack of recognition, Macmurray has not been without admirers:

Radical psychotherapists R.D. Laing and John Heron were inspired by his thinking;
Sociologist Ernest Gellner admired his work;
Archbishop Carey considered him ‘a great theologian’;
Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks rates him highly;
Prime Minister Blair claims Macmurray as an early inspirational influence.

Given this background, it is all the more curious that his work is so little known and so little understood. In fact, there are now the seeds of a growing interest in Macmurray, particularly in North America.  After years of silence from the academic world, several books have recently been published including a biography and a compilation of selected writings.  There has also been a reprinting of many of his books.

This website is intended for both academics and non-academics to encourage exploration of Macmurray’s writings.  If you are interested in this website and want to know when I have completed the first phase of development, drop me an email and I will let you know.   email:   paulgee@onetel.net
