Wing Chun in the Modern World

Today we have a lot of sports or competition fighting, which is good for what it is, but doesn't reflect the true nature of self-protection. Safety rules reduce their effectiveness.

An example is Western Boxing, which is practical to a certain level, but has many weight divisions. A flyweight boxer would never go up against a heavyweight boxer, and the fighter is limited to a few basic hand moves, because of the large gloves used. In Boxing there is also no kicking, no takedowns, and you know your opponents.

Yet there is a line, between getting injured and Self-Defence training.

If an instructor teaches properly, students safety can be fully assured.

Competition rules have diminishing practicality. Another example is Japanese Sumo Wrestling, where sheer size is often enough. Sumo is very well known for its bouts or contests. However, if you do not possess size, strength or power this principal of force against force is of little advantage to you.

Force against force is only viable if you are against a weaker opponent. In a real Self-Defence situation, you never choose the size of your opponent, or what he is allowed to do, or what is going to happen. The chances are that there could be two-three opponents against one!

C.W.C is a true Martial Art of Self-Defence, differing in essence by utilizing internal strengths and abilities.

These are often felt but not seen.

A realistic system, excelling in situations where there are no rules. It is used only in an emergency, where Self-Defence is not a choice but a necessity to protect one's self. Your life may depend on it.

This is just as relevant in society today, where you may face the prospect of fighting someone armed with dangerous weapons. Classical Wing Chun is the only real Street Self-Defence System in which a smaller weaker person can overcome a much larger stronger one. It deals with situations in the shortest possible time, in seconds, not minutes. It is based on skill where neither size nor physical strength are prerequisites, and uses the opponents force against themselves.

It can be said therefore that this is ideal for women and suitable for men, beneficial to all ages, of physical ability. To explain how this is achieved in words, is near impossible and is equally difficult to achieve through videos. However, they can only impart an idea or a feel of the art.

The training offers the opportunity to challenge and strengthen you both physically and mentally to the highest degree. It enables you to deal with life in general on many levels, increases inner peace, self-confidence and imparts a thirst for knowledge and personal growth.

The perception in the West is that Kung fu is violent, and once you have mastered it, you can take on anyone. This is not the case. What you learn is to control and diffuse a situation, not to hurt someone.

Learning Gung Fu is a way of life, exploring your own potential, a focus for self-development and it's this aspect that can make it an art form.
