North Leeds Jazz - new venue March 1

  9/2

The jazz night is back on Tuesdays in a purpose built music room with stage and lights at The Highwood Hotel, Brackenwood Drive, Moortown. For people relying on public transport it's a 5 minute from from The Harrogate Road with No 3 + 13 buses from town - (to confirm). After our last experience losing the venue the Landlord has agreed to our request for a confirmed weekly room booking of 6 months.

The music policy will be 'mainstream / modern' jazz with the emphasis on local bands and musicians. The first two months programme is now complete and will be posted on the forum http://jazzinleeds.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=365 .

Jazz at The Devonshire Hotel Grassington

  24/1

Forum member Dee Doyle reports that her Tuesday jazz night returns after a council enforced summer break of several months to allow modification to the regulations of the music licence.
Dee says
"Now we are back with the addition of a top class guitarist, every Tuesday night at The Devonshire Hotel, Grassington (01756 752525) 8.30 start, admission is free. The management also provide a delicious light supper for everyone, which is also free!!! I hope to bring in a guest musician on a monthly basis, commencing this Spring".

North Leeds Jazz lose Chapel Allerton venue

22/10

The landlord at The Queen's Arms pulled the plug on our use of the upstairs function room. We have tried to find an alternative venue to run the booked autumn programme but to no avail. Audience numbers had been dropping at the venue but we had just started a promotional push with flyers being distributed by regulars and press releases to local media. On the final night we had double the turnout of previous week thanks to this promotional effort. The Leeds Weekly News is running a story on our search for a venue.

We now have a committee who are setting up 'North Leeds Jazz' as a constituted members club. The clubs aims are to secure a future for a jazz night in North Leeds featuring bands from our region.

More details will be posted on the forum http://jazzinleeds.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=261.

Tuesday Jam Session at The Chemic

18/9

A new jam session has started at The Chemic Tavern in Woodhouse on Tuesday nights from 9pm. Several things make this jam rather exceptional. Firstly the back room of the pub has a grand piano, double bass and basic drum kit! They also serve real ale with Timothy Taylors Landlord being the most popular.

The news about the threat to the jazz night at The Mansion has made the addition of a forum section seem an essential addition to the web site. It has been something that has been suggested frequently and I have finally invested some time into getting one going.

You can visit the forum from the link below. I'll add another button or link on site soon.

The Mansion Hotel - change of use threatens jazz night 5/3

Rumours confirmed by article in YEP (Monday 1 March). The 'Mansion' is to be refurbished into a visitor centre, offices and a community meeting centre. Present tenants Craven Gilpen have supported the Tuesday Jazz Night since late 90's. It will be a great shame if this night was to stop. If anyone has any more information maybe they could post it on our new forum?

This spring sees a major new music festival for Leeds from the combined forces of Leeds College of Music, Leeds Jazz and Leeds City Council. Based around the 'cultural quarter' of Quarry Hill, with Django Bates as festival director, FUSELEEDS spans music styles from jazz to contemporary classical music with the theme of 'new music'. The main part of the festival runs from Wednesday 3 - Sunday 7 March. Jazz performers include US guitarist Bill Frisell and a birthday tribute for the UK saxophonist Evan Parker.

In the run up to the festival Courtney Pine plays 'The Venue' on Saturday 21 February and award-winning trumpeter Tomasz Stanko plays The Wardrobe on Wednesday 25 February.
