The sound of singing bowl can have the effect of magnifying silence creating spacousness which, for me, is wonderful and can be very uncomfortable because we are so used to continuous activity. I have also experienced the vibration of the bowls healing sickness of myself and others. This is why singing bowls are now a standard healing and meditation tool as well as being used in Buddhist practice.

Each of the types of bowl listed below has its different merits. One quality they all have is the causing of mind to slow down and one to become 'spacey'. It is definitely not a good idea to listen to bowls while driving or any activity where concentration is needed. The traditional handmade bowls can have as many as four tones depending on how they are struck wheras the machine made and crystal singing bowls usually have one tone but are very pure. I price each bowl mainly according to its sound. The longer the singing bowl sings and vibrates and the more tones it has the higher the price. The age and look of the bowl are secondary factors when I determine a price. The prices of bowls on this web site are average prices for that catagory of bowl. You can call us up and we can play a number of bowls in the catagory of your choice. If you do not want to call, you can order from the site by pressing 'buy' and I will choose an appropriate bowl for that price.

MACHINE MADE: The following bowls are machine made in Kathmandu with the same materials as the the handmade bowls. They usually have alot of resonance as much as handmade bowls of the equivalent size. Because the rim is very smooth and regular they are very easy to play. The tone of the bowl will vary according to the diameter and height of the bowl. The tendency is for the smaller the bowl the higher the pitch.

CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS:

The following bowls are machine made in USA from 99.80% ground quartz crystal. The crystal is ground to a powder and heated to extreme temperatures and dropped in a bowl shape mould. They are played with a special leather wand that glides smoothly over the rim of the bowl. Relative to the metal bowls the sound they produce has alot more volume. They are capable of filling a large hall with sound. Also the sound lasts as long as the large handmade singing bowls.

ACCESSORIES: A large bowl may be able to produce 4 or 5 tones. The tone that is emitted from your bowl will be partly depandant on the stick or beater that you use and partly the way that you use the stick or beater on your bowl. In this way it is important to have a selection of beaters.

Also the surface on which you play your bowl is important. If you are not playing it in your hand, then the bowl must not move around and the surface must minimally absorb the sound. For example a soft cushion or a carpet with more than 3mm pile should not be used to play your bowl upon.
