Our Tailors cut the material from hemp scarves. These are woven by the Himalayan mountain people from hand-spun hemp yarn. It is only legal in Nepal to grow hemp in the mountains and not in the valleys such as the Kathmandu valley. The hemp scarves are woven on very simple looms and are carried to the city by people on their backs (there are very few roads in the mountains of Nepal). We buy the scarves from collection points or just people who come directly to the work shop. The hemp scarves are then vegetable dyed. Many of the commonly used dyeing processes in the Third World are azo-based and these are very harmful. This becomes very evident if you ever visit a factory using azo-dyes. I usually start feeling a soar throat and feel tired. What they would do over a prolonged period I would hate to imagine. The toxic waste product go into the local rivers in Kathmandu.
