a photo of 'our' Tailors I took in Kathmandu early this
year (2009). When we first employed them in 1996 we had very much a boss and employee ralationship reminiscent of the days of the Raj. They each had one change of clothes, lived in rooms without running water, spoke very little English and were very shy. All instruction had to be done using a translater. Now they all speak enough English to have a conversation and dress very well. Also over time they have become excellent Tailors. And very importantly we are friends. 'Our tailors' are much better paid than the average tailor in Nepal. We provide them with an apartment and a workshop with good facilities. They are paid by piecework and work when they want to. They are given two paid holidays per year. Our Tailors have learnt to produce over 100 different products. A number of which are included in this web site and are exclusive to Natural Earthling: |
