There were some 67 of these vehicles - which makes it far more common than one would think. Pictures of them per se are not common, but they do lurk in the background of many. A famous picture of an E3 in Brighton station c 1900 bears the caption referring to a lady seated in front of a Billinton full 2nd - which is, in fact, this very coach. Also, in a Middleton Press volume - Chichester to Portsmouth - there is clearly one of these coaches at East Southsea, standing across the platform from the Terrier ‘Preston’. The compartments were arranged 3rd - 1st - 2nd - 1st - 3rd. |
