The Wisdom of the Tarot |
I have been studying and using the tarot for twelve years now and I have always found it to be a remarkable, useful and extraordinary guide. Whenever I am concerned about an issue in my life I call on my guides and angels and light a candle before trying to resolve the issue through the tarot. And I have sometimes been staggered by the insights that I have gained through their use. I don't just use any old tarot either, I use the Mythic Tarot, which is a deck that I feel adds more depth to a reading than any other tarot that I've played around with - and I've played around with many. At one time I counted the decks I had and was a bit shocked to discover that I had over twenty different divination decks! After this I sold some of them and only kept the ones that I used with any regularity, but it is always the Mythic Tarot I use for insightful readings both for myself and others. Insights can be gained through the underlying myth on each card, but there is added depth to be found via the interpretations of the psychology behind the myth which has been explored in some depth by Juliet Sharman Burke & Liz Green. Juliet Sharman-Burke has been practising astrology and tarot for over twenty years; she is also a qualified analytic psychotherapist with a private practice in London, whereas Liz Greene is an a Jungian analyst and psychological astrologer. The tarot does not tell your future as such and I doubt whether any kind of diviniation does this with any degree of accuracy. Nothing is written in stone; it can't be written in stone because we have free will and with that free will we make our own choices. So someone who tells you this or that is definitely going to happen, is leading you astray, because only you can decide whether you are going to follow a particular path or not. There is also the possiblity that someone you are destined to meet will also pursue their free will which takes them out of your way for some time. This is why the time factor is notoriously difficult to pin down when doing readings. What the tarot does do is depict trends and in this sense it is very much like astrology. It can point you in the general direction, but only you can decide to make something happen. I could tell you that it looks like you will be moving house, but at the end of the day, only you can decide whether you really want to move or not. Although having said that, at the time of writing this (april 2004) I have just moved from one rented house to another and during the preceding 6 months I knew that something was going to happen to force me to move because it kept showing up in my readings. Sure enough I was eventually given a 'surprise' notice to quit the property. Had I not forseen this event in my tarot cards, the eviction would have come as a huge and emotionally challenging shock for me, but having been forewarned I was mentally prepared for something to happen and dealt with it accordingly. Following inner guidance the way I do, I was also led to where I am now by a series of prophetic dreams and found yet another lovely house, this time overlooking the sea. So, opportunity disguised as loss; as one door closed another one - perhaps even a better one - opened. It pays to be prepared in this way. |

Some people are frighened by the Tarot as though the cards themselves have some demonic power. This is nonsense; the cards are just that; cards, bits of paper with pictures on them. The cards themselves have no power whatsoever; the power lies in the timing of the reading. The cards work because we are all living in the NOW, whether we can see it or not, and as the reading is made in that NOW moment, the cards that come up are spot on and relevant to where you find yourself at that particular point in time. . There are also no bad cards in the tarot, although some can be seen to have slightly more negative interpretations than others; and I do mean slightly. The Death card for instance does not mean death in the accepted sense of the word; it simply means the death of a situation. it marks a definite end to something; a completion, and as such it's a positive card because it depicts a new and fresh beginning. I've pulled the Death card loads of times and I am still here! It never remotely bothers me to pull this card. Very, very occasionally it can mean an actual death, but only rarely. In all the years I've been using the cards, I've only seen this happen once, and that was with my own mother. I did a reading for her and was rather perplexed to see the Death card for her future. As she was then a widow and was settled into a sheltered bungalow, I was troubled to see the Death card showing up in her future. I couldn't see what possible completion or new beginning she could be facing. When I returned home I did another reading for her and there it was again: the Death card in the future position. So I called on my guides, shuffled the pack, laid all 78 cards out in a straight line and said: 'Are you telling me my mother is going to die soon?' I pulled out a card and it was the Death card. Out of 78 cards, I pulled the Death card yet again. Somehow though, I'd already known. I dreamt of her death 9 months before it actually happened, and I also dreamt of my father's death 9 months before it happned. It was almost as though the 9 months was a gestation period for their rebirth into spirit. And my guides wanted me to be forewarned; they knew better than I did, that I was capable of dealing with this knowledge - and so I was. Another slightly negative card in the pack is the Devil. What does this mean? Well, it doesn't mean you're playing with black magic for a start! The Devil simply means attachment to something that is not good for you. It could be a relationship, it could be drugs, it could be a state of mind; in fact it could be anything. But whatever it is, it's something that you would be better off letting go of. Another potentially negative card according to some tarot readers is the Tower. I have read books on the tarot that describe the Tower as spelling doom and disaster and it really annoys me that they perceive this card to be so negative. Nothing is that negative, the only negative factor here is the interpretation of that card. The Tower usually means that everything around you is going to change. Friends, environment, social structures etc. This was the card I kept pulling before I was evicted from my previous home. Yet this has led me to another equally nice property (with a much better view!) and also to a fresh new beginning. What's negative about that? Change as disruptive as this is only as negative as your own ability to deal with it. I chose to see the move as a sign that things were ready to shift in my life after a fairly lengthy period of feeling pretty much 'stuck'. I won't deny that my stomach turned over when I realised that I was being evicted, but I was also pleased! I was pleased because at last things were moving and I was more than ready for change. So there you have it, the only three so called negative cards in the pack, which aren't really negative at all, it's just the perception of them that's negative and with just a slight shift of perspective that view can be turnd on its head into something far more exciting and positive. Ultimately it depends on whether you view your bottle as being half full or half empty? Which would you choose? If you would like me to do a reading for you then I will need you either to email a photograph to me or to send me one by post, which will of course be safely returned. Readings will be based on the Celtic Cross Spread, which is traditionally 10 cards, but I always add a few more. You may ask up to 3 questions for which I will use more cards, so that your reading will be in greater depth, and will offer guidance, and avenues of choice. Be aware that only you can create your future, but a tarot reading may help you with some choices. The cost is £20 per reading, along with 1 free greeting card of your choice from the site. You can either pay using the Paypal link below, or you can click on the link below below that, fill in the form and send me a cheque at the address given. And don't forget to send me the photograph!
