The sun had just risen over Ait Benhaddou in the lower Atlas mountains of Morrocco. In late September it is still warm enough for the few remaining inhabitants of this fortified casbah to sleep outside on the flat rooftops of their double storeyed mudbrick dwellings. The elderly lady was hanging her blankets over the parapet to air in the morning sun.
