Fibrosis and weakening of the rectal muscles and sphincter may lead to urgency and incontinence. Specialist advice and investigations are needed to identify the cause and to ascertain and whether the problem is due to the scleroderma or to rectal prolapse from childbirth for example. As with all gut problems, the treatment depends on the results of the investigations and may include exercises and anal plugs. Surgery for a prolapse may help but will not necessarily improve incontinence.
