Treatments such as creams and lotions with specific ingredients to combat itching e.g. Balneum Plus( or Xepin cream( may offer temporary relief. Antihistamines such as Atarax( may help, especially at night. PUVA therapy, ultraviolet light treatment available in hospital dermatology units, has been tried but has not been found to be terribly useful. As a last resort low dose steroids may occasionally be suggested but must be used with great care especially in patients with diffuse disease as their use may precipitate a renal crisis.
