I am hunting information on SAMUEL TILDON PAYNE. Samuel Tildon Payne was a school teacher. He maried Mabel Clone Kirtly and had one kid, my grandmother, Dorothy Lucile Payne Sumpter. Its told that Samuel was a kind teacher but very mean at home. When he made a threat to harm Dorothy, Mable took Dorothy and left. Mabel and Dorothy finished their lives in Oregon on a small farm where my family now lives. Samuel Tildon Payne could have remaried, there is nothing pointing to this but its just an idea to keep in mind. Thanx.

The Historical Society of University City (MO) is looking for information about Selena Paine, born New Jersey 1791, died 1860 (probably in St. Louis, MO). A grave marker was just discovered in the backyard of a house (ca. 1880) being torn down for new construction. We hope this was not covering a grave because the site was destroyed by a backhoe. The grave marker is coming to the Historical Society for safe keeping. I will appreciate any information anyone might have about Miss/Mrs. Paine.

One Paulus Vanpeene was a lawyer at The Hague, The Netherlands, who advised the French philosopher Rene Descartes during a lawsuit in 1643 in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Has anyone more information on him. Please write to me if have any. This will contribute to a monography on the correspondents of Descartes which will be published in the coming year. I am looking for connections between René Payne (1734-99)and an estate at Dunton Bassett, Leicestershire, England. RP lived at a farmhouse in DB which he had modernised and upgraded by Sir John Soane, whom he also employed to rebuild Sulby Hall, Welford, Northamptonshire, where he owned other land. He also had 4 sons by Martha Pearce (nee Woodford) of Welford. I would be interested to know a bit more about that relationship and about those sons, who took the name Payne after RP died. My interest is not family history as such, for I have no connection with the Payne family. However, I am researching local history, and in particular the history of Dunton Bassett. Any help with RP and his close relations would be helpful to me. Here's hoping! Wendy Warren
