Merle (Paine) Bragdon <mbragdon@hotmail.com>
I am a direct decendant of Thomas Paine who came to America from England with his son Thomas (born in 1612), in 1622. Thomas, the son, married Mary Snow, who was born in Plymouth, Mass about 1630. She was the daughter of Nickolas and Constance (Hopkins) Snow. They had eight sons and two daughters. He died August 16, 1706 and Mary died on April 28, 1704. They settled in Eastham, Mass. My line left for Boston in 1781 and migrated to what is now Bar Harbor in 1783. Anyone out there related to me?

I have been tracing my Kentish ancestors for some years now and have got back to Thomas Pain and Mary Baker who lived in River, near Dover, Kent from about 1754. The family in those early years were mainly papermakers or bricklayers. I have compiled a database of Kentish PAIN, births, marriages & deaths from the GRO in London and will search for any PAIN references for anyone, but only for this particular spelling. Have also got quite a few newspaper references from the 19th Century. I would be pleased to hear from anyone with PAIN connections in Kent.

I am looking for anyone or everyone who can help locate information concerning my grandfather, his siblings, and parents and anything else. Charles Harvey Payne DOB 9/29/1883, Ennis, Ellis County Texas. Father William Henry Payne, Mother Janie Ward. In the 1980 census, Ellis County Texas, there is a William Payne with a wife of Mary (of course, this is before Charles is born. I have no idea if this is the correct Payne for my grandfather. These Paynes came from Alabama. He had two or three siblings. Maybe two brothers and one sister. He never told his family about his parents or his siblings. He left his family early. We do not know where his parents are from. They may have been first generation US born citizens His ancestors are suppose to be irish. He left his family early in his life and never looked back. He made a comment early in 1962 that his sister may be in town staying at the Brown Palace in Denver. He never checked her out and his children and grand children never asked questions. In the 1920 census, my grandmother Sophie Anne Hosea Payne (Charles' wife) stated that her husband was from Tennessee. She is known to have not trusted the census takers and may have given wrong information on purpose.

Laura Payne, b. 14 Aug 1844, Catlettsburg, KY I have Laura Payne's obituary (below) and little else. She was my gg aunt. Any connections? I have lots of her descendants, only the name of her parents. --------------------------------------- Laura Payne Cady was born near Ashland, Kentucky August 14, 1844, being a daughter of Joseph Payne. Her father was one of the well-known Payne family of Virginia and an early settler in the western part of old Virginia, which later became West Virginia. Mrs. Cady was a direct descendent of General William Payne, better known as "Little Joe" Payne of Revolutionary fame. The Payne family was one of the early English settlers of the Virginia colony. They have been closely identified with the history of Virginia and the nation. She spent her girlhood days on the old plantation, which adjoined the Big Sandy River in West Virginia. [She was] Educated at the Academy for Girls at Huntington, West Virginia and then two years at a private school for young ladies at Cincinnati, Ohio. Laura Payne was married to D. W. Cady, then of Rochester, New York April 12, 1865 and immediately removed to Battle Creek with her husband, where she has since made her home until her death last Saturday. Mrs. Cady is survived by three brothers and three sisters, Mrs. Thomas Charlton of Ironton, Ohio, Mrs. Ella McCullock of Hinton, West Virginia, Mrs. B. B. Burke of St. Petersburg, Florida and William, Alexander and Arthur, all of Kenova, West Virginia.
