I am a swedish military historian, currently researching british adventurer captain Paine (or Payn), a voluntary in the swedish-russian war 1789-90. He was aide-de-champ to general Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt. Captain Paine participated in two campaigns against the russians. He was wounded in the fight of Saivitaipale (in what was then the russian part of Finland) in June 4. 1790. He died from his wounds about a month later. He was very rich though, his father was said to be a banker in London. There was a banking firm in London at that time, Smith, Payne & Co. Captain Paine was young and good looking and well liked by his fellow officers. Paine got aquinted with the scottish captain James Thaine, who was also fighting on the swedish side in that war, in another brigade. Does anyone have a clue where to search for the more information? I´m searching for: Paines christian name? His career before entering swedish service? His family background? Genealogy. Correspondence, newspaper articles? Any portrait? I would be grateful for any hints. Im about to write an article. Kind regards Lars Schulze, Stockholm

When I was young, I recall seeing an old photo of Lewis Payne, conspirator with John Wilks Booth. His image has haunted me for some time for he bears an uncanny resemblence to my father, Roy Albert Paine, Jr. Does anyone have a geneology of Lewis before or after his death (by hanging)? I've not done any research, but am willing to start...it's interesting. Thanks, Lloyd.
