Tracing my G Grandmothers line back. She was Clara Payne b.1880 Cromer, Norfolk, UK. With the help of a distant cousin have managed to trace back to 1720's still based in Cromer. If anyone is descended from a Payne/Pain/Paine in N. Norfolk would like to hear from you. In a recent book I found on Norfolk surnames Payn was one of the oldest in the county dating back to before 1270.

I am from the line of Payne's(Paine's) that I have traced back to Buncombe Co. N.C. I have found that there are many, many Payne's in that area and I believe that I am related to most of them if not all of them. I have proved my line to a John W. Payne and his wife Mary Bradburn who moved to western Buncombe Co. N.C. in the Turkey Creek area around the late 1700's. He had many children and my Great grandfather was one of the youngest boys, he was Daniel A. Payne and married Senia Ball. Senia's Ball's first name has been found with many spelling's but the family called her Sena or Senia. She was a daughter of a Joel Ball and Elizabeth Jarvis from Wilkes Co. N.C. This Daniel A. Payne and Senia Ball owned the Dan Payne Mountain that is about 5 mile south of Marshall, in Madison Co. N.C. Others have traced the line on back to Virginia to a Barnett or Bennett or Barnabus Payne. Love to hear from anyone that connects to this line.

Found that my url didn't work to my home page. This page is maintained by my grand nephew in St. Louis. He sometimes works on it and it is off the web during those times. I'll keep checking and see when it gets back on line. Or you can check back every once in a while. It is a generic site that does not have dates on living people but does list sons and daughters in family groups. Older people who are deceased have all dates included.

My only PAYNE is a grandmother (plus a few greats) born a very long time ago. I have little on her and nothing on her parents. This is all I have. Martha PAYNE b: abt 1772, Pakenham, Suffolk, Eng d: 2 Sep 1854, Rougham, Sfk, Eng m: 23 Jul 1699, Pakenham, Sfk, Eng sp: Samuel BRADBROOK chr: 7 Sept 1778, St. James, Bury St Edmunds, Sfk, Eng d: 31 Aug 1851, Rougham, Sfk, Eng. Actually I can't document them as my grandparents but I know that if not parents at least side kin. The one I am connecting to them is definitely a grandmother who was born in Rougham...that is the connection but I can not find her docs. The other connections in my line are: BRADBROOK, SYRETT, CROXFORD (which is my grandmother's...without the greats...maiden name)BOWERS (my mother's maiden name) JORGENSEN (my maiden name) This is a long shot, I know but in this game you never know. I am seeking additional information on the ancestry of my paternal great-great-grandmother, Mary Ann Payne. She was born 8/23/1841 in Nauvoo, Illinois, to Samuel Payne and Mary Barnes.  Samuel was born 7/24/1814 in Melbourne, Cambridge, England.  Mary Barnes was born 7/16/1815 in Kelshall, Herefordshire, England.  Both Samuel and Mary Barnes died on the trek across the plains to Utah, and their four children (including Mary Ann) ended up in different places.  Mary Ann went to south-central Utah and married George Spencer.  Their child Elizabeth Spencer was my great-grandmother. I am trying to find more information on the Payne line. I believe that Samuel's father was also named Samuel and that he was born in England, probably about 1790, but I don't have any more information than that.  I would appreciate any advice or guidance that anyone can provide.  Thank you. I have a very bad photo-copy of two separate articles which appeared in "The Atlanta Constitution" on 22nd and 29th January 1933. They were by Robert L.Paine, Professor of History at (I think) Emory Junior College, Oxford, Ga. The Headlines are: "Descendant of Paine Family Gives Interesting History of Southern Branch" and "Paine Kinsman Gives Data on Dixie Lines". My copies are almost illegible and I wonder whether anyone out there has better copies - or indeed can identify Robert L. Paine. I believe the Newspaper itself lost all its back-numbers in a fire. Do any libraries in the US keep back-numbers? (In the UK we have a national Newspaper library at Colindale near London, which has a collection of nearly every newspaper back to the 17th Century). Any help in tracking these articles down would be helpful to me and I am sure interesting to many of you in the US - particularly in the South. John Paine

Hello! I'm looking for the parents/siblings of my Great-Great Grandfather Robert Charles Payne. Family legend has it that he was a horse trader from Missouri when he arrived in Amite Co, Mississippi and married Amazon Jane Caston in April 1865. They had at least three children (John Clark Payne, Thomas Payne, and Julia Payne) and he died between 1875 and 1878. Amazon remarried to Enos Travis and lived in Amite Co.
