A wonderful little cartoon created by Pat for an advertisement for Brooks Saddles circa 1928.
Every Autumn from 1907 GHS (George Herbert Stancer) had visited Frank Patterson at Pear Tree Farm, his Sussex home. Patterson would post himself at the top of the lane near his ouse, seeing GHS on his bike, in the distance, Pat would give a welcoming wave of his hat held aloft on the barrel of his shotgun.
The ritual of the weekend was always the same. After a splendid meal, prepared by Mrs Patterson, the two old friends, would retire to the famous room and sit either side of the inglenook fireplace. With a glass of whiskey in hand, they would settle the affairs of the world and bring to life the ghosts of the past.
Only when the great log on the hearth had been reduced to dust would they retire to bed. This 1943 self-portrait, drawn whhen he was 70, shows Pat welcoming GHS in the time honoured manner.
