| Johnny Helms 1924 - Helms has been a cyclist from his very early years, perhaps because it was the only way he could escape from the remote Cheshire village where he lived. At the age of seven he was doing rides of 20 plus miles and he did his first 100 mile ride when he was just 12. The years 1942-47 were spent in active army. He joined the Warrington Road where he has held most official posts in the club and is currently their president. He has been a regular contributor to Cycling since 1946 when his first cartoon was published. Among his many contributions to the journal are two popular strip cartoons, which have featured Baz for 13 years and Honk for 18 years. His other activities have included giving slide shows and cycling thousands of miles to club dinners in the winter. He is an honorary life member of the C.T.C, has signed the Golden Book of Cycling and has been a recipient of the prestigious Bidlake Award. |
