BioUpdateS Consultants is run by Dr John Hammond. He obtained his BSc and MSc in Biochemistry and Soil Science at the University of Wales. This was followed by a PhD in fungal biochemistry at the University of Sussex.

He worked in research in the biochemistry and molecular biology of plants and fungi at Horticulture Research International and Rothamsted Experimental Station before becoming Reader in Molecular Genetics at North East Surrey College of Technology (Nescot). Here he taught aspects of molecular genetics and biotechnology. His research program included work on microbial molecular biology, molecular population genetics and brain receptor molecular biology. He has also taught secondary school science and carried out research at University of California, King's College, London and University of Surrey.

He was Project Director and Content Editor for the ESF/ADAPT-funded TOP Biology web-learning program at Nescot, and has designed and constructed a number of life sciences websites.
