Your own personal English teacher all day, every day

A total language experience by learning formally (lessons) and informally (meals & trips) with me and my husband in our home

Small-group teaching or one-to-one provides the intensive learning situation you are looking for.

Course and Programme

You normally come as a small group (2-4 people) OR on a One-to-One basis.

You will have every opportunity to improve your English skills.

At the same time you will learn about the local area, local history and culture and current affairs:

You will have lessons at Deer Park Farm (3 full hours in the morning , 6 days a week = 18 hours)

You then put that language into practice during afternoon excursions (4 afternoons for approx. 4 hours Group programme ; 3 afternoons for approx.4 hours One-to-One )

My focus is normally on improving communication and fluency

To help you get used to natural English, you will meet other native speakers who live locally.

We will visit places of local interest. The programme will be organised to reflect your own interests

I welcome all levels, but some English is required

Accommodation

Deer Park Farm is a converted barn in a quiet country setting in 15 Hectares of land, some of which is woodland

You will have your own double or single room and separate bathroom with shower in our spacious farmhouse, plus use of our large kitchen/diner

Larger accommodation of a separate holiday flat can also be made available. To avoid disappointment, however, this should be booked well in advance as it is also rented to British holidaymakers and high season weeks are taken up very quickly

The house overlooks a garden and sun terrace (south-facing)

We are a non-smoking household but you are welcome to smoke outdoors.

About me

Hello, my name’s Helen Chessum. I’m your teacher & tour guide

I’m a qualified teacher of English (Post Graduate Certificate of Education for teaching adults)

I’ve spent 15 years teaching English to adults, 4 yrs in Frankfurt, since 1998 in Devon

I have experience of many different types of courses: general English, Cambridge exam preparation, Business English & English for Special Purposes

My special area of interest are the problems German speakers have in English

I also have a degree in German with Italian

I was an examiner for Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce for Business English

I have a varied work history having worked in publishing, marketing, training, social work & motor vehicle trade

My husband has experience in the Telecommunications field in Network Design & Project Management.

5 km from the seaside town of Shaldon and only 3km from the River Teign

Within easy reach of Dartmoor National Park, Torquay and Exeter

10mins drive from Newton Abbot which can be reached by train or bus from London Heathrow, Bristol and Stansted (more information on request or visit the links below)
