Manual Handling

Course Purpose

The programme concentrates on practical techniques for carrying out competent manual handling risk assessment.

Aim

To produce competent risk assessors to cover the requirements of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.

Objectives

After the course delegates should:-

  • have a basic knowledge of European-derived health and safety legislation, enabling the carrying out of competent manual handling assessment
  • be able to review manual handling risks and potential avoidance/control measures; and
  • be able to identify manual handling training needs to support the risk assessment process

Who should attend?

Managers and supervisors playing an active role in risk assessment/management or responsible for implementing or co-ordination a manual handling risk assessment system.

Programme

A general discussion will be held regarding the relationship of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations to other recent health and safety legislation and the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1994. Introduction to the main regulations within the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and to manual handling issues.

The principles of manual handling will include:-

  • Avoidance of manual handling by elimination, automation or mechanisation
  • Who should undertake assessment
  • Handling techniques:
- Posture, twisting, stooping
- Lifting distances/positions
- Pushing and pulling
- Sudden, movements
- Physical effort
- Team handling
  • Load assessments
- Weights
- Bulky or unwieldy
- Difficult to grasp
- Unstable
  • Environmental conditions
  • Risk assessment including general hazard spotting
  • Recording the assessment and use of checklists together with recommendations
  • Practical session relating to Good Handling Techniques
