Chris Nielsen from Kentucky says he presents a big band show from noon to 2:00 pm local on Saturdays over WUKY-FM, which is streamed over the net: www.wuky.org (Real Audio).
Barry Lane has written to the magazine recommending WDUV in Sarasota FL: www.wduv.com. He says they play everything from the Ames Brothers to Sinatra.
David Colp has written in to the magazine from the US to recommend WKHR in Cleveland OH: www.wkhr.org.
Gerry Stonestreet recommends Isles FM www.isles.fm on Mondays from 10:00-11:00, and
Offshore Music Radio www.offshoremusicradio.com on Sundays & Wednesdays: 13:00-14:00, Thursdays: 20:00-2100, Saturdays: 9:00-10:00 (Windows Media Player, Winamp & Real Player).
Ted Nunn of the Sinatra Music Society and Les Peckham both recommend Angel Radio www.angelradio.co.uk (Windows Media Player, Winamp & Real Player).
Syd Atkinson mentions My Kinda Music on Moray Firth Radio on Monday evenings, 7:00 to 8:30 (registration required)
www.mfr.co.uk (Windows Media Player & Real Player)
Laurie Stead recommends Swing Radio from Northern Broadcasting Ltd www.northernbroadcasting.co.uk (MP3 & Real Player)
You can find other stations from sites such as Radio Locator www.radio-locator.com
and Web Radio www.web-radio.fm
To listen to web radio, you need a computer with a sound card and speakers or headphones. The most popular streaming formats need Windows Media Player - if you have a Windows PC, you will already have that - Winamp, the basic version of which is free from www.winamp.com, or Real Player, which you can get free from www.real.com.
Real try to get you to download a free 14-day trial of RealOne RadioPass, but clicking the "Free RealOne Player" link in the top right-hand corner of the page will get you the completely free version. Real tries to load extra stuff onto your computer which then keeps prompting you to upgrade to a paid version, so you may prefer to use Real Alternative instead. This is a free product which uses Windows Media Player to play Real format output, and you can get it from www.codecpackguide.com
Because of the way that Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL), who collect performers' rights payments in the UK, have decided to charge internet radio stations for licences, a number of UK stations have decided to make their broadcasts available to listeners in the UK only. Incidentally, PPL are also trying to stop UK listeners getting access to internet music broadcasts from outside the UK, but so far without success! More details in a Guardian article Will licensing kill the radio star? published on 4 May 2006.
In the US, royalty fees are due to rise sharply on 15 May 2007, and some are predicting that this will bankrupt many American web broadcasters. See, for example 'Fatal' blow to web broadcasters on the BBC's web site.
