ST ERTH RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION:
The St Erth Residents Association still needs a secretary and some suggestions on new projects for the village. We still need members, membership is free and you don't need to get involved in any committee business if you don't want to. Our current idea for a new project is seating on the river bank by the church and on the river bank opposite the fishing lakes.  We have obtained part funding for this but need to find more to go ahead. We also think a village green joining the play park by the river would be something we could get involved with. It is important that people realise this association was not just set up to benefit the Vicarage Gate area of the village- it is for the benefit of everyone in the whole village.
If you are interested please contact Andy Jones Tel: 01736 753856

BACK TO HIS ROOTS

Michael Tremberth moved from
London to live here in October. He has known St Erth since the age of 3 months, when he was brought here by his parents in August 1937; he first lived here at the beginning of the war, when his parents entrusted him for a few months to the care of his grandparents, Hurwin and Mabel Maddern, of Treveddon House (which lies at the junction of Tredrea and Treloweth Lanes). His parents moved to St Erth in 1943 and his brother John was born here in April 1943; after this his family moved to Redruth until the end of the war, when they went back to the Midlands.

Hurwin and Mabel Maddern left St Erth in 1964, going to live with Mabel's niece at Redruth; Treveddon House was sold to Nancy Dodd. Mabel died in 1965, after which Hurwin went to live with his daughter Cicely, first in Lichfield, Staffordshire, and then in East Molesey, Surrey, where, unfortunately, he was killed in road accident in July 1970. Michael's last immediate relatives living in St Erth were Olive and Tom Mitchell, of Hollie Cottage, Tredrea Lane; Tom's nephews Harold, Dennis and Russell still live in Fore Street, while their sister Gwennie James lives in School Lane. Michael remembers coming to watch Esley Lashbrook shoe horses at his forge in the 1950s, and now lives opposite it, at 14 Fore Street. And along the street, at no.24, lives Willie Bray (brother-in-law of Tom Mitchell), with whom he played cards at the clubroom in the 1950s.

Michael continued to visit this part of Cornwall after his grandparents left the village, getting to know the painter Bryan Pearce, of St Ives, the sculptor the late Max Barrett, of Trencrom, and other artists and craftsmen in St Erth, Mousehole and Cripplesease. His main problem at the moment is getting the quart of his possessions into the pint pot of 14 Fore Street. He looks forward to taking a greater part in village life in 2002. Incidentally, while visiting Britttany in 1992, he came across St Erth's twin village Ploulec'h and is looking  forward to revisiting it perhaps in the near future. Michael, who was widowed in 1985, and subsequently remarried and divorced, has one son living in Surrey.
