Archarian Languages
MERCIAN
In use by the humans of Mercia. Although there are various quirks dependent on country, they are all essentially the same. This is the main language in West and Central Mercia, Caladon, Peonia, Cornmarr, Sucellos and the Mercian Triad.
DARK TONGUE
This language is spoken by various of the 'dark races', e.g. Orcs, Goblins, and so on. The differing dialects are:
· Ogrish: by far the most basic of languages, with few words for describing concepts, and many for describing killing and food.
· Goblish: a cheeky language used by Goblins and other small blighters (e.g. Kobold and Hobgoblin). Also called 'Gobshite' by some Mercians.
· Grummshe: spoken by Orcs and is similar to Goblish, except that there is less implied cheekiness, and more words for fighting. Some Goblins speak Grummshe when trying to impress Orcs.
· 'Dark Elven': the original Dark Tongue, this is the fully refined version of the language which the lesser 'dark races' have imitated and bastardised for themselves. It is quite a harsh tongue, and wastes little time on pleasantries. Many words for poison and murder.
ELVEN
Comprising of three dialects:
· High Elven: most formal of the three.
· Wood Elven: viewed as an uncivilised version of the language. Usually the most common dialect learnt by non-Elves.
· Grey Elven: a cryptic dialect, not really in general use.
THULIAN
Spoken by the human population of Thulia (at least those that haven't been killed by Demons). Similar to Scandinavian languages in the real world. See 'Futhork'.
FUTHORK
Spoken by the human population of Futhork. This is similar to the Thulian language. The language diverged long ago when the ancient Futhorks travelled further south along the coast, and their own language developed from then on.
BAERISH
Language of the Bretai tribes of the south. Some people think this is the ancient basis of the modern Mercian tongue.
DWARVISH
There are two dialects, created after the dwarven race split after the Dwarf/Elf war. There are some differences:
· Angar: civilised tongue of the dwarves of Vengurak.
· Norden: brutal tongue of the dwarves of Nord.
ANCIENT KLIFFROTH
A dead language used by the human population of the Kliffroth Empire, which was all but decimated during and after Ragnarok. This language is Germanic in form and structure.
ANCIENT LEYISH
A dead language used by the human population of Leyfield, which was all but destroyed during Ragnarok. It is based on the Greco-Roman language family.
MERCIUM ARCANUS
A magical language used by Mercian Mages. It is commonly used as the language of choice in human spellbooks. Other races and cultures have their own magical languages of course, for example Dwarven Runescript and Elven Daar-Weave. As a lot of the concepts in magical languages are decidedly esoteric, language ranks in these are far harder to learn if you are not a dedicated wizard. Note that a Character's starting language ranks cannot be used to learn a Magical Language.
OTHER LANGUAGES
See the Historian for details. An example could be a Thieves Sign Language (which would differ by region), but that's just a rumour, isn't it..(!)
The following are languages spoken in the vast southern half of the continent:
KASKIAN
Spoken by the people of Kask. A bit like Egyptian.
SPARTIAN
Spoken by the people of Spart. Similar to Mongolian.
SARDIOLAMESE
Spoken by the people of Sardiolam. Similar to Arabic.
SELKERAN

GENOSA
Spoken by the pygmy people of Genosa.
T'IEN
