Chanctonbury Ring

Our landmark: Chanctonbury Ring
(pre 1987 storm)

The village of Wiston (pronounced Wissun) is situated in the county of West Sussex just north of the South Downs. The parish of Wiston is about 1996 Hectares and had a population of 210 in 1996. The parish is very rural with the dwellings well spread out. Chanctonbury Ring is the landmark of Wiston. The ring originally referred to the circular prehistoric earthwork dating from c. 800 - 600 B.C. But now has come to mean the crown of beech trees planted in 1760 by Charles Goring. Chanctonbury Ring is visible from most of Sussex except the coastal strip. In October 1987 the trees of Chanctonbury Ring were decimated by a severe storm, however, young beech trees have been planted by the Goring family for future generations to enjoy.

Wiston House

Wiston House was built by Sir Robert Shirley in the 1570's to replace an earlier mediaeval manor house. The house was much reduced in size by Sir Charles Goring in the 1740's and was remodelled in the 1840's. It has been in the possession of the Goring Family since 1743 but they have not lived there since 1926.

The Wilton Park Conferences have been held at Wiston House since 1951.
