Halewood, to the north of the Township of Hale, was once heavily forested and known as Hale's Wood. The forest was the king's hunting domain and he guarded his privilege jealously.

Over the centuries, however, the privilege was whittled away and land gradually became cleared and turned over to agriculture. All that remains today of the once-mighty forest are a few scattered copses.
