Finishing touches being made the day before the war memorial was rededicated |
A plan to tidy up the war memorial was first proposed as part of the village's Millennium celebrations. The Millennium came and went, however, with nothing happening. Until 2004, that is, when the proposal was resurrected and the work was finally put in hand. The finishing touches were made just in time for the D-Day+60 celebrations. The work included restoring railings, cleaning the memorial and installing a flagpole and a subsidary stone bearing eleven names missing from the main memorial. The main memorial was rededicated on Sunday, 6th June, 2004, and the new memorial stone was unveiled by Commander Ian Fraser, VC, DSC, Legion of Merit. At the same time a new Hale branch of the Royal British Legion received its standard at St Mary's Church, followed by a parade of a piped band and other branches of the Legion. |
