| A brief Introduction and History of the Wing Chun System |
|
Classical Wing Chun (CWC) is the fastest, most efficient, logical and effective system of close range combat probably ever devised and is of great practical value. The Buddhist Nun, Ng Mui, came from the Siu Lum monastery (or Shaolin Temple) founded the art around the 17th Century, in the region of Southern China. It was then passed on and further refined through her first student, Yim Wing Chun. It is from Yim that we have now inherited our name. Classical Wing Chun represents a unique Gung Fu fighting system, in that, a woman (a very small one) created it. It is world-renowned for its lightening fast hand speed and it is in fact twice as fast as any other fighting system. The fundamental principal is scientific, using the shortest distance between two points, that being a straight line, thus saving both time and energy. At the time, there was a need for a new revolutionary system and thus Wing Chun was born. It is an outstanding example of a non-traditional method. This new type of Gung fu was designed to counter the established forms of Shaolin and had to be kept secret. Herself being extremely adept and highly trained in the traditional Arts, Ng Mui studied the leading established methods and came to the conclusion that they contained weaknesses. They contained too many overlapping and excessive movements, overly elaborate stances and techniques and the emphasis was that on brute force. Shaolin Gung fu was an excellent form of spiritual, mental and physical discipline and looked very impressive to the eye, but it's practical value seemed doubtful. It was that which led her to strip down her Gung fu, to that which was and is now, the essential. From Yim Wing Chun, it has been passed down and further refined by several generations, to the Art we now have. CWC seems to appear very simple to beginners, but once they have invested some time in it, they soon realize how very sophisticated it is. The Classical System contains the following; Three empty handsets, 'Siu Nim Tau' (the little idea), 'Chum Kiu' (arm seeking), and 'Bil Jee' (Darting fingers). The 'Chi-Sau' or 'Sticking hands' practice shows us how to make the empty handsets spontaneous. This two arm clinging exercise is unique to Wing Chun, using reflex responses, rather than fixed forms. There is also the famous 'Muk Yan Chong' or (Wooden Man Dummy) training set. A tree looking structure that represents a man. This device is used for advanced level students. We have 116 set techniques to be performed to improve the fighting skill. Even today the more serious student can train with two weapons. One long and one short: 'Look Dim Boon Qwan' (6 1/2 point Long Pole), and finally the 'Baat Cham Dao' (Eight Cutting Knifes) sets. Although not practical these days against modern warfare, has a use of improving empty hands training through contrast of long distance properties. The late Martial Arts Gung fu film star Bruce Lee, had the same idea as Ng Mui, and was obviously inspired by his own learning of Classical Wing Chun Kung Fu. This dates back to 1955 in Hong Kong, under my Si Gung, GM Yip Man, and shortly afterwards he created his own system, called 'Jeet Kun Do' or 'The Way of The Intercepting Fist'. It is mostly based on the Classical Wing Chun theory and I would say in this respect, 'That the body of a tree is the same but the branches can be different'. |
